Wausau Woodchucks News Release
Trailing by three runs heading to the ninth inning, the Wisconsin Woodchucks rallied but fell one short to the Green Bay Bullfrogs, 5-4, Wednesday night at Joannes Stadium.
The Woodchucks (17-11, 35-27) struck the scoreboard first in the fifth inning. Wisconsin loaded the bases when second baseman Zak Leighton singled, catcher Jack Klages reached on a fielding error, and center fielder Taylor Kohlwey walked. Left fielder Derek Peake drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and first baseman Brendon Hayden followed suit with an RBI-groundout.
Leading 2-0, Chucks' starting southpaw Seth Davis surrendered one run in the bottom half of the frame, but was aided defensively by Peake who gunned out a runner trying to score the tying run.
However, in the sixth inning, after Green Bay (13-13, 30-31) recorded back-to-back one out singles, left fielder Paul Jacobsen blasted a two-run double to left-center, spotting Green Bay to a 3-2 lead. The Bullfrogs tallied single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take the 5-2 lead.
Against Frogs' closer Ivan Vieitez in the ninth inning, the Chucks scored two runs on Klages' RBI double and Peake's RBI single, but Hayden struck out to end the threat.
Offensively, the Chucks got multiple-hit efforts from Peake (2-for-3, two RBIs), and newcomer second baseman Zak Leighton (2-for-4).
The Woodchucks are back home at Athletic Park on Thursday night, as they take on the Lakeshore Chinooks in the first of two. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M.
