BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie Baysox scored four times in the bottom of the fourth inning and used four innings of shutout relief from Pay McCoy and Andrew Triggs to finish off a 4-3 victory over the Thunder on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium.
After Eddy Rodriguez gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead with a double in the top of the second, Bowie scratched out four runs in the bottom of the fourth off Thunder starter Brady Lail. Tucker Nathans doubled home a pair and David Freitas reached on an infield single to push across runs in the inning.
The Thunder offense responded with a pair of runs of their own in the top of the fifth when Ali Castillo (3-for-4, R, RBI, 2 SB) drove in Jake Cave with a single. Castillo scored later in the inning on a wild pitch thrown by Bowie starter Ariel Miranda.
Miranda earned the victory as Baysox relievers Pat McCoy and Andrew Triggs worked around four Thunder baserunners in over the final four frames.
Triggs was the beneficiary of two close calls in the top of the ninth inning. LF Rico Noel broke for home on a groundball off the bat of Ali Castillo and was tagged out on a close play by catcher Rossmel Perez. After Castillo stole his second base of the night, Mark Payton battled for 11 pitches before taking a breaking ball for a called third strike to end the game.
The Thunder broke a string of 130 at-bats between extra base hits when Jake Cave doubled to lead off the ball game. In fact, the Thunder recorded doubles in each of the first three innings of Thursday night's defeat.
The loss drops the Thunder to 0-14 at Prince George's Stadium since the start of the 2014 campaign. Tony Renda saw his 10-game on-base streak come to an end as he went 0-for-4.
Your Thunder look to bounce back on Friday night against the Baysox with RHP Eric Ruth (6-3, 2.68) on the mound. Bowie will start RHP Gene Escat (1-3, 3.32). Listen live to Thunder baseball on 91.3 WTSR and online at Trentonthunder.com beginning at 6:50 on Friday night.
