Late Rally Falls Short as Redbirds Lose 7-5

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds lost their second-straight contest to the visiting El Paso Chihuahuas, falling 7-5 on Thursday night at AutoZone Park in the second game of a four-game series.

The loss dropped Memphis's to 63-63 overall on the season and returned the club to .500 first time since July 3 (41-41). The Redbirds moved to 5.5 games behind first place Round Rock in the PCL American Southern Division with 18 games to play.

The Redbirds threatened in the ninth by scoring three runs and loading the bases, but El Paso reliever Frank Garces struck out Dan Johnson (2-for-5, K) and Greg Garcia (1-for-5, 2B) to end the rally. The Redbirds sent nine to the dish that inning, highlighted by run-scoring hits from Anthony Garcia (2-for-4, 3B, 2B), Alex Mejia (1-for-2), and Ed Easley (1-for-5).

Outfielder Xavier Scruggs hit his 13th home run of the season in the defeat. Second baseman Dean Anna added three hits from the leadoff spot.

El Paso moved out to 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning on a Jake Goebbert RBI single and tacked on its next run in the third on Rymer Liriano run-scoring base hit up the middle.

Memphis came back with runs in consecutive innings to knot the game at 2-2, beginning with Scruggs solo blast to left in the fifth. In the next inning with A. Garcia on third after tripling, pinch hitter Cody Stanley tied the game with an RBI base hit to center.

The Chihuahuas put the game away with five late runs, beginning with plating two in each of the seventh and eighth innings, highlighted by run-scoring doubles from Alex Dickerson, Casey McElroy, and Hector Gomez.

Redbirds starter Arturo Reyes allowed two runs on six hits over five innings for a no-decision.

The Redbirds and Chihuahuas continue their series at 7:05pm CT on Friday night at AutoZone Park. Southpaw Marco Gonzales (0-4, 5.50) looks for his first win of the season against El Paso left-hander Robbie Erlin (6-5, 5.85).
