SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 18) - The Salt Lake Bees took an 8-2 loss to the Iowa Cubs in the series opener Wednesday night at Smith's Ballpark. The I-Cubs held an early 5-0 edge before the Bees managed to get on the board with a tally in the third as Matt Joyce skied a solo home run to right field. The home team put another run up in the fourth when Alex Yarbrough led off the inning with a single and later scored from third on a sacrifice fly from Rafael Lopez. Iowa quickly regained the two runs in the fifth on an RBI double from Christian Villanueva followed by a sacrifice fly from Tommy La Stella and put another tally up in the eighth to pad their lead and cement the final score.

Jo-Jo Reyes (3-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs, six of them earned, off nine hits in four and one-third innings of work. Ryan Verdugo followed with a flawless one and two-third innings before Edgar Ibarra chipped two innings and gave up one run. Wesley Wright closed out the ballgame with a scoreless ninth inning. The pitching staff combined to whiff 10 Iowa batters, while dishing out three free bases. Roger Kieschnick and Efren Navarro accounted for five of the Bees seven hits between them, respectively going three-for-four and two-for-four.
