Fresno Grizzlies News Release
FRESNO, Calif. - Asher Wojciechowski and three relievers combined for the seventh shutout of the season and fourth in the month of August to push the Fresno Grizzlies (76-48) to their season-high ninth straight win. The 7-0 victory over the Round Rock Express (68-57) on Wednesday night at Chukchansi Park is the 17th win in the last 18 games and improves the Grizzlies home record to 41-20. They sit five wins away from tying the single-season franchise record for overall victories (81), while the magic number to clinch their division and a playoff spot is six.
Wojciechowski was stingy throughout his 6.0 scoreless IP, retiring 14 of 16 from the end of the first until a Nomar Mazara single occurred with one out in the sixth. It marked the second scoreless start of the season for Wojciechowski and handed him his eighth win. Luis Cruz pitched a scoreless seventh, Joe Thatcher struck out the side in the eighth, and James Hoyt pitched a perfect ninth to help the club reach a franchise-best 28 games over the .500 mark.
Once again, Tyler White was a difference maker on offense for the Grizzlies. He collected two-run singles in the first and fifth and is 9-13 with three doubles, a triple, a homer, and 14 RBI over his last three games. The infielder is hitting .401 (61-152) with 22 extra-base hits and 45 RBI in 39 games with Fresno and boasts a .518 (29-56) average with runners in scoring position.
MVP-candidate Matt Duffy contributed with the bat and glove tonight. His two-run single in the fifth not only gave him RBI 96 and 97, but it also marked his fifth straight multiHIT effort. In the sixth, he made a diving stop at third on a Ryan Rua grounder with two runners on and threw across to first to get the out that ended the inning.
L.J. Hoes picked up another funky box score line, going 1-1 with two walks, two stolen bases and two runs scored. He's hitting .355 (11-31) with seven stolen bases and 13 runs scored over his last eight games.
During this impressive 17-1 month of August, the Fresno offense has averaged 7.2 runs per game, while the pitching staff has turned in a 2.89 ERA (53 ER/165.0 IP).
Round Rock and Fresno meet again Thursday night at Chukchansi Park for game two of the series. The featured promotion is Legends of the Throwdown, with food trucks La Elegante, El Premio Mayor, Tacos Mazatlan, and El Mexicano offering fans some of the best tacos the Valley has to offer. The night also features the Tecate Thursday deal, which offers fans 21+ $2 24-ounce Tecate and Tecate Light, while all fans are eligible to purchase $1 12-ounce sodas. Gates open to the park at 6:05 PM, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM PT. Tickets are available for the game at the Chukchansi Park Box Office or online through FresnoGrizzlies.com.
