Reno Aces News Release
OKLAHOMA CITY - The Reno Aces (@Aces) took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning but suffered a heartbreaking 8-5 loss to the Oklahoma City Dodgers Wednesday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
Dodgers (74-49) second baseman Darwin Barney hit a two-out, three-run walk-off homer off Matt Reynolds in the bottom of the 15th inning to deliver the knockout punch. The 4-hour, 41-minute, 15-inning marathon matches the longest game played in Aces franchise history.
Aces (60-64) starter Jhoulys Chacin (@Jhoulys45) pitched into the ninth inning but saw the Aces' 5-2 lead fizzle in a matter of moments. The right-hander struck out Kyle Jensen to start the inning. Two bloopers followed - a single by Darwin Barney and a double down the right-field line from O'Koyea Dickson. The two hits chased Chacin from the game after 8 1/3 innings.
Enrique Burgos was summoned from the bullpen and struck out Elliot Johnson for the second out the inning before Scott Schebler delivered a two-run single to trim the Aces' lead to 5-4. A wild pitch sent Schebler to second, and pinch-hitter Shawn Zarraga lined a 3-2 pitch into left-field to score Schebler with the tying run.
The bases were loaded when Jamie Romak made a diving stop on a groundball hit by Austin Barnes to save the game and end the inning.
Reno and Oklahoma City traded zeroes from the 10th to 14th innings. The Dodgers left at least one runner on base in each inning before Barney's heroics in the 15th.
Peter O'Brien got the scoring started in the top of the first inning with a two-out, two-run double to right-center. It scored Mike Freeman (@MikeBFree5) and Danny Dorn who started the game with back-to-back walks.
The Dodgers came right back against Chacin in the bottom of the first. Schebler started the frame with a lead-off double and moved to third on Corey Seager's base hit to left. Schebler scored on an RBI groundout by Andy Wilkins, and Seager came around to score the tying run on a single up the middle from Austin Barnes.
It remained 2-2 until the top of the fourth when the Aces used three doubles to take a 5-2 lead. Brandon Drury started it with the first two-bagger of the inning. After a wild pitch from Ian Thomas, Gerald Laird (@laird_lll) gave Reno a 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly.
Jordan Pacheco (@Jstylep) followed with a double down the left-field line, and Chacin helped himself with another double to plate Pacheco. After an infield single by Freeman, the third run of the inning scored on a fielder's choice from Dorn.
From there, Chacin settled in. He stranded two runners in the fifth and sixth innings, and retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth before disaster struck in the ninth.
Freeman led the Aces at the plate with a 3-for-6 night, putting his hit total to 11 over the last three games. Drury was the other lone Ace to produce a multi-hit game.
Reliever Ramon Troncoso got the win in relief for the Dodgers and Reynolds was tagged with the loss.
Game two of the series is Thursday night in Oklahoma City. Right-hander A.J. Schugel (1-6, 12.33) starts for the Aces against right-hander Mike Bolsinger (2-2, 1.93) for the Dodgers. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. PST.
The Aces return to Reno for an eight-game homestand set to begin on Sunday against Nashville. Group outings are on-sale now at www.RenoAces.com or by calling (775) 334-4700. For up-to-date news and notes throughout the season, follow the club on Twitter (@aces) or like the team on Facebook.
