Late Lead Slips Away in Extra Inning Loss

GENEVA, Ill--- The Cougars saw a 4-2 lead into the eighth inning dwindle away as Fort Wayne came back to even up the series one game apiece at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Wednesday. The TinCaps won 7-4 in the second consecutive extra-inning game between the two teams.

For the fifth time in the first six games of the season the Cougars were first to get on the board. Jake Hannemann led off the offense with a triple and was sent home on Ben Carhart's sacrifice fly to right putting the Cougars on top, 1-0 in the first inning.

The TinCaps took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the second. After Luis Tejada reached after being hit by a pitch, Jose Carlos Urena went yard for the first homerun allowed by the Cougars' pitching staff for a 2-1 Fort Wayne lead.

Jacob Rogers quickly erased the TinCaps' lead in the bottom of the second, sending the first pitch he saw over the right field wall for his first long ball of the year and a 2-2 tie.

The ballgame remained tied until the Cougars produced a rally in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded, Shawon Dunston Jr. delivered a single through the right side of the infield to score Carhart and Yasiel Balaguert. The run scoring play gave Dunston his first two RBI of the season and put the Cougars on top 4-2.

The TinCaps comeback started in the eighth inning. Nathan Dorris allowed an RBI groundout to Fernando Perez to score Mallex Smith cutting the Cougars lead to 4-3.

Jose Arias had a chance to put the game away for the Cougars' first save of the year, but Dane Phillips had other plans. As the second batter of the inning, Phillips drove a ball over the right field wall to tie the game, 4-4.

Fort Wayne didn't stop there as the TinCaps piled on three more runs in the top of the 10th. Hannemann lost Franmil Reyes' fly ball in the sun to put a runner on second base with one out. Perez singled to bring home Reyes' and give the TinCaps the lead. After Arias hit Tejada, Dane Phillips sent a pitch to left field, which Dunston over ran. The play sent two more runs in and finished the scoring 7-4 in favor of the TinCaps.

Tayron Guerrero (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, while Arias fell to 0-1. Nick Mutz (1) earned the save.

The Cougars (3-3) and TinCaps (2-4) will finish this series at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Tyler Skulina (0-0, 0.00) heads to the mound for the Cougars while the TinCaps will send Walker Weickel (0-1, 12.00).
