Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Geneva, Illinois -- The TinCaps committed five errors Tuesday night, including one that cost them the game, in a 12-inning, 4-3 loss to the Kane County Cougars in the opener of a three-game series.
Despite facing an early 3-0 deficit, the TinCaps came back to tie the game, 3-3, in the fifth inning. The score stayed deadlocked until the 12th inning, when Kane County (3-2) loaded the bases with nobody out. A ball hit to Fort Wayne (1-4) shortstop Franchy Cordero was misplayed, allowing the game's winning run to score. Cordero, trying for the force-out at home, threw the ball wide of catcher Ryan Miller, ending the game.
Cordero, 19, committed two errors on the night. His first set the stage for Kane County's first run of the game to score.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first inning against Fort Wayne (1-4) starter Walker Lockett, who made his Midwest League debut. Cougars leadoff man Jacob Hanneman singled, stole second base, and later came in to score on Cordero's error. The next batter, Ben Carhart, grounded into a fielder's choice, pushing the lead to 2-0. Lockett allowed three runs, but none of them were earned. In his five innings, he surrendered three hits, walked one, and fanned a batter.
Lockett, who only appeared in three games in 2013, was handed a baserunner in the second when TinCaps third baseman Dustin Peterson committed a throwing error, one of his two on the night, permitting Trey Martin to scamper to second. Martin was knocked in on a Hannemann single, making it 3-0.
That lead stood until the fifth inning, when Fort Wayne got consecutive hits from Luis Tejada, Ryan Miller, and Henry Charles. The last of those three hits got Tejada around, and Miller scored on a sacrifice bunt from Mallex Smith. Charles crossed the plate on a Peterson base hit to tie the game. From the fifth inning until the 12th, the TinCaps mustered just one hit - a Luis Tejada sixth-inning single.
The Fort Wayne bullpen was strong, despite Nick Mutz (0-1) being charged with the loss. The quartet of Josh Richardson, Erik Cabrera, Genison Reyes, and Mutz combined to throw six innings and did not allow an earned run.
The middle game of the series is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 ET. The starters will be Adrian De Horta for the TinCaps and Paul Blackburn for the Cougars. The game can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
