Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - On the first Hump Day of the season, starring Humphrey the Camel, the Lansing Lugnuts (3-3) got over the hump of an early deficit and thumped out 11 hits in a 6-4 win over the Quad Cities River Bandits (2-4) on Wednesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
For the second consecutive contest, Quad Cities opened an early 2-0 lead, but Lansing third baseman Mitch Nay answered with a two-run double to deep centerfield in the bottom of the first inning to knot the score.
The Lugnuts kept rolling with runs driven in by Dickie Joe Thon and D.J. Davis in the second inning and an RBI double by Jorge Saez in the third to push the lead to 5-2.
Quad Cities closed the gap to one run in the fifth with the second two-RBI double of the night for third baseman Tyler White, but Matt Dean gave the Lugnuts some breathing room in the bottom half by driving in Dawel Lugo with a single to right field.
The River Bandits chased starting pitcher Alberto Tirado after only one frame due to pitch count, but the Lugs received a respite from reliever Griffin Murphy (W, 1-0). The left-hander took over on the mound to start the second inning and tossed three scoreless innings, striking out five of the first six men he faced.
Jandel Gustave (L, 1-1) surrendered five runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings in his first start of the season.
Thon, the walk-off hero of Tuesday night's home opener, extended his season-opening hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-4 night, driving in one run and scoring twice.
The Lugnuts will look to sweep the three-game series in tomorrow night's finale at Cooley Law School Stadium. Lansing will send right-handed pitcher Jeremy Gabryszwski (0-1, 9.64 ERA) to the mound for his second start of the season. The Lugnuts offense will face Quad Cities lefty Evan Grills (0-0. 0.00 ERA).
