Travieso, Dragons Relievers Lift Dragons to 4-1 Win

Peoria, Ill.-Dayton starting pitcher Nick Travieso and four relievers combined to scatter five hits as the Dragons defeated the Peoria Chiefs 4-1 on Wednesday night. The two clubs have split the first two games in the series. Both teams are 3-3 on the season.

Travieso (1-0) worked five innings and allowed one run on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts. He struck out the last four batters he faced and earned the win.

Reliever Zack Weiss replaced Travieso to start the sixth and struck out the side in order in the first inning he pitched, running the string to seven consecutive strikeouts by Dragons pitchers. Weiss retired all five batters he faced and gave way to Joel Bender with two outs in the seventh. Bender was replaced by Alejandro Chacin with one out in the eighth before Scott Brattvet pitched the ninth inning. None of the relievers were scored upon as they combined for four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. Brattvet notched his first career save.

The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Sebastian Elizalde walked to start the inning before singles by Tanner Rahier and Sean Buckley loaded the bases. Jeff Gelalich then lined a single to right to drive in both Elizalde and Rahier and give the Dragons an early lead. Peoria scored their only run in the third, but the Dragons were able to shut them out the rest of the night.

The Dragons added to their lead in the sixth when Elizalde walked, eventually stole third, and scored on a single to center by Buckley to make it 3-1. In the seventh, Beau Amaral walked with two outs and scored from first on a double to the fence in left by Phillip Ervin to close out the scoring.

The Dragons collected six hits. Buckley was 2 for 4 with a run batted in. Elizalde did not have a hit but walked twice and scored two runs.

The Dragons and Chiefs close out the series in Peoria on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (EDT). Sal Romano (1-0, 6.00) will look for his second straight win for the Dragons against Peoria's Jimmy Reed (0-0, 1.80). Notes: The Dragons improved their team earned run average to 1.87, best in the Midwest League...Dragons relievers have allowed just two earned runs all season..The Dragons stole three bases to increase their season total to 12 over six games. Amaral stole his fourth base of the year and leads the team...Dragons pitcher Junior Morillo, who left Tuesday game with an elbow sprain, will undergo an MRI on Friday and is expected to be placed on the disabled list.
