Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks have been doomed by late goals all season and the Mavericks bad luck in the third period would once again rear its ugly head as the Mavericks lost to the Quad City Mallards 3-2 Saturday night at Independence Events Center. A goal with one second remaining in regulation time by Quad City's Obi Aduba would be the dagger, as Missouri went on to lose their second consecutive game.
The first period lacked action, as both teams struggled to notch double digit shots in the period. Missouri was only able to mount eight shots in the period to Quad City's six. Mike Wakita and Jason Kostadine dropped the gloves just one minute into the period, giving the home town fans something to cheer about in the opening frame.
Dominic D'Amour finally got the Mavericks on the scoreboard early in the second period, netting a power play goal on a pass from fellow defenseman Ray DiLauro. Olivier Filion was also given an assist on the goal. The Mallards responded four minutes later on a goal from Tyler Townsend, tying the score at one. Gerry Festa had stopped 17 out of 18 shots in the period. Equally impressive on the other end of the ice was Jerad Kaufman, who made 15 saves on 16 shots.
The third period would decide the contest as the Mallards and Mavericks exchanged blows throughout the period. The Mavericks struck first in the period on a goal from an unlikely source in Blake Forsyth. The goal was Forsyth's second of the year and came with just under two minutes to play. With the game seemingly in hand, the Mavs tried to hold off the Mallards, but Eric Giosa found a loose puck in the slot and lifted it over a diving Festa to tie the game at two just 30 seconds after Forsyth's goal. The Mallards would dash the hopes of overtime with just one second left on the clock. Obi Aduba tipped a shot from Darren McMillan just as the green light went on behind the net. The goal stood and the Mavericks dropped their second straight game.
The Mavericks finished the night one-for-four on the power play. The Mallards were unable to capitalize on four man advantages throughout the game. Gerry Festa ended the night with 24 saves on 27 shots. Kaufman stopped 27 of 29 Missouri shots.
The Mavericks hit the road next Friday to renew their rivalry with the Wichita Thunder. The Mavs will return home on Saturday, January 8 to take on the Tulsa Oilers.
