Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs scored a season-high five first period goals and never looked back on their way to demolishing the Mississippi RiverKings 8-2 Saturday night at the CenturyTel Center. The âBugs improved to 20-11-0 on the year and snapped a three-game home losing skid with their sixth win of the season against Mississippi.
Prior the game the Mudbugs honored longtime player and current General Manager Jason "Soupy" Campbell by retiring his #11 jersey to the CenturyTel Center rafters. The Mudbugs did Campbell proud in the ensuing contest as Steven Crampton finished with a hat trick and David Rutherford scored two goals of his own to lead the way for the âBugs.
Shawn Limpright finished with three assists, while James DeLory, Brett Smith, Justin Aikins and Joe Blaznek all had multiple points as well. Michael Couch also finished the night with a CHL season-high +6 rating.
The Mudbugs exploded out of the gate with five first period goals to lead 5-1 after twenty minutes. Jeff Kyrzakos started the scoring less than a minute in and was followed by Steven Crampton and James DeLory, who snapped a wrist shot past Alexander Pechurskiy's right pad to make it 3-0 less than seven minutes in.
Chris Auger's shorthanded goal got Mississippi on the board at 3-1 at 8:47, but Jamie Milam answered for the âBugs a few minutes later to make it 4-1. Rutherford then capped off the period in the final minute with a beautiful re-direction of Simon Mangos' pass to put Bossier-Shreveport on top by four after one.
Larry Sterling replaced Pechurskiy in goal in the second and Patrik Levesque scored for Mississippi midway through the middle frame, but Crampton buried a nice feed from Brett Smith during a 2-on-1 at 14:53 and the Mudbugs led 6-2 after two.
Justin Aikins helped set up Rutherford's second of the night on a backhander at 11:15 of the third and then Crampton tipped in a great centering feed from DeLory in the final minute of the contest to finish off the hat trick and cap the 8-2 victory.
John DeCaro (9-4-0) stopped 23 shots to earn his 98th career victory as the âBugs outshot the âKings 38-25. Alexander Pechurskiy (8-6-0) took the loss after giving up five goals on 13 shots in the first period, while Larry Sterling made 22 saves in relief. Neither team managed a powerplay goal in the contest with Bossier-Shreveport finishing 0 for 3 and Mississippi going 0-for-4.
The two teams will now head to Southaven, Mississippi to finish out this weekend's back-to-back set tomorrow afternoon at the DeSoto Civic Center. Opening faceoff is set for 3:05 pm as the Mudbugs start a season high six-game road trip. Radio coverage starts at 2:45 pm and the game will also be shown live on CHL-TV.
