Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
ODESSA, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (13-17-3) fell to the Odessa Jackalopes (16-14-2) on Saturday night 5-2 as the Jacks' finished the sweep of the Bees. Zak McClellan and Brandon Smith each scored for the Bees and Dan Rosen made 32 saves on the 37 shots he faced.
Odessa opened the scoring just three minutes into the game when Sebastien Thinel continued his torrid season with his 52nd point off the goal. Thinel was waiting on the backdoor and though Dan Rosen made the initial save Thinel was able to clean-up the rebound.
Just a bit over seven minutes later the Bees tied the game at one a piece when Zak McClellan buried his 11th goal of the season. Sean Muncy brought the puck into the offensive zone and after pressure fed Aaron Lee. Lee forced Odessa netminder David McKee to bite on the shot and Lee slid it to McClellan who put the puck in the open net.
After one period of play Dan Rosen had made 11 saves in his first start since December 11.
Odessa would score first in the second period at the 5:35 marker when Kenny Bernard deflected a David Van Drunen shot in front. Mark Ehl picked up the secondary assist.
The Bees tied the game at two with Brandon Smith's second goal of the season. Smith picked up the puck in his own zone and skated it all the way up the ice ripping a shot from the blocker side hash mark and it beat McKee glove side.
The Jacks' would reclaim the lead at 18:48 of the second with a Mike Ramsay shot from in between the two faceoff circles after a failed Bees clearing attempt. Todd Robinson and Dominic Leveille picked up assists.
Odessa would add a pair of goals in the third period as the Bees were unable to find the back of the net again. Philippe Plante and Mike Ramsay both scored power-play goals as the Jacks' power-play finished the night 2 of 6 while the Bees went 0 for 2.
The Bees are back in action Wednesday January 5 in Arizona as the Bees face the Sundogs for a three game set. The puck will drop at 8:05 p.m. Central Time.
