Chesapeake Baysox News Release
(Bowie, MD) - The SeaWolves committed two errors in the bottom of the ninth on plays that could have sent the game to extra innings, allowing the Baysox to come away with a 2-1 victory. The Baysox are now 22-17 and remain 2.5 games behind Harrisburg in the Southern Division. The win extends Bowie's home winning streak to eight games.
Jason Berken turned in another great start for the Baysox. He scattered five hits through seven innings, allowing only one run with no walks and four strikeouts. The lone run was scored on a solo homerun by Wilkin Ramirez in the fourth inning. It was the only extra-base hit for either team and Berken did not allow more than one hit in an inning.
As good as Berken was, Luis Marte was even better for the SeaWolves. Marte allowed one run on four hits and three walks in eight innings. Three of the four hits came in the second inning when Nolan Reimold, Ryan Finan and Brian Peterson all singled to load the bases with nobody out. Kennard Jones bounced into a double play to score Reimold before Blake Davis grounded out to end the inning. Marte did not allow more than one batter to reach base in any other inning and retired twelve Baysox in a row at one point.
Rocky Cherry relieved Jason Berken in the top of the eighth inning. Cherry joined the Baysox on Wednesday as part of a Major League rehab assignment. With one out, Cherry walked Danny Worth and gave up a single to Caonabo Cosme. Will Rhymes hit a line drive back to the mound that Cherry caught for the second out before Deik Scram grounded out to end the inning. Felix Romero relieved Cherry in the top of the ninth inning and struck out all three SeaWolves he faced.
Carlos Rojas led off the bottom of the ninth with a single up the middle off reliever Matt Righter. Lou Montanez drew a walk and Jeff Nettles was called out on strikes on a 3-2 pitch. Nolan Reimold hit a groundball to shortstop Danny Worth that could have been an inning-ending double play, but the ball got past Worth and the bases were loaded with one out.
Juan Cedeno relieved Righter and got Ryan Finan to hit a groundball to second. It was another ball that could have been an inning-ending double play, but second baseman Will Rhymes couldn't field the ball and Rojas scored the winning run from third.
The Baysox will try to sweep the series when the teams meet Thursday at 11:05 a.m. RHP Chris Tillman (3-0, 3.38 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for the Baysox, he will be opposed by SeaWolves LHP Luke French (2-2, 3.83 ERA).
The Bowie Baysox are in their 16th season as the "AA" affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Baysox individual game tickets, season ticket plans, group outings, picnics and birthday parties are currently available for booking by calling the Baysox front office at (301) 464-4880.
