Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Down 3-0, the Dubuque Fighting Saints did not go quietly into the night. Tallying twice in the third period to claw to within a goal, they ultimately fell a goal short to the Sioux City Musketeers, 3-2, at the Mystique Community Ice Center on Friday night.

Colin Theisen got the party started with a redirection of a Casey Johnson shot from the center point in front of Musketeers goalie David Fessenden at the 10:41 mark. Theisen, playing his first game back since his recall from Coulee Region, scored his sixth goal of the season.

Not quite done, Petter Mî=A4kitalo continued his hot streak with a goal of his own, his ninth of the season, on a net-dancing play by Michael O'Leary. The Swede found himself wide open on the back door after O'Leary's initial wraparound shot did not find a way through Fessenden.

Stout defense carried the way for the Musketeers late, as well as early in the game, as they allowed only 24 Fighting Saints shots towards Fessenden to make it on goal. Fessenden, playing in his first full USHL game, picked up his first USHL win in the process.

The fourth line of Theisen, Zach Solow and Dallas Gerads took a late power play shift and almost came through on several scoring chances across the full two minutes, but were rebuffed by the Musketeer penalty kill, which went letter-perfect on the night.

The Musketeers played a solid first period that led to a scoreless tie. But their second period effort led the way. Mitch Fossier connected off of a scramble turnover out in front of the Fighting Saints net at the halfway point of regulation time. But it was the costly mistake late in the second period that turned the tide.

On the power play, Josh Wilkins got a stick on an Ian Scheid shot-pass with 27 seconds remaining in the second period to put the visitors up two at a critical point of the game. Brian Rigali sealed the result early in the third period with a snap shot off the right wing side on a two-on-one break, putting the visitors up three.

The Fighting Saints could not muster more than ten shots on goal in a period tonight, being outshot in the final frame, 9-6, despite the furious comeback effort.
