Madison Capitols News Release
Geneva, IL - The Madison Capitols (15-18-2-2) could not stop a potent Chicago attack, as the Steel (16-17-3-3) rattled off the game's final three goals to pick up a 5-2 win at the Fox Valley Ice Arena on Friday night. The first period saw very little in the way of five-on-five play as both teams were saddled by penalty troubles in the opening frame. As the teams combined for nine power play chances, albeit with many abbreviated advantages, only one team could strike with the man up.
That team would be the Capitols, as the newest Capitol introduced himself in a prominent way. Out on the ice with a power play unit in his first period with the Capitols, Dmitri Buinitsky (Mogilev, Belarus) set up shop in the right wing corner and slid a perfect back-door pass across the net mouth to Sam McCormick, who finished off his 16th goal of the season to put the Capitols on top at the 10:00 mark. McCormick's goal set a personal career best for goals in a USHL season.
However, Chicago would not take kindly to the deficit, and their newest player responded quickly. Trevor Hamilton, a defenseman by trade, jumped up into a four-on-four rush at the 12:18 mark and roofed a backhand try behind Garrett Metcalf at 12:18.
The Steel had a chance to extend their lead with a brief five-on-three advantage, but Metcalf came up with the answers and even drew a penalty to Chicago's Brandon Duhaime to end the threat. Metcalf made 12 saves in a very busy opening period in his crease, whereas Daniel Vladar only had to fend off five Capitols shots at the Chicago end of the rink.
The Capitols received an opportunity to tie the game early in the second with carry-over power play time from the first frame, but instead it was Chicago that took advantage.
After intercepting the puck at his own blue line, Marc Johnstone won a race to a loose puck, then picked up Karch Bachman for a two-on-zero breakaway, and Bachman tapped home the feed from Johnstone just 42 seconds into the period to put Chicago ahead, 2-1.
The Capitols would have to survive another strong push from the Steel on the shot board following the Bachman goal, as the Steel would end up outshooting the Capitols, 26-13 through two stanzas.
However, Metcalf and the Capitols held the fort to stay within a goal, and with less than two minutes left on the second period clock, the visitors broke back even under poetic circumstances.
After missing 32 games after suffering a lower-body injury in October, Eugene Fadyeyev, in his first game back, jumped into a rush, took a centering feed from Alec Broetzman in the high slot, and launched a wrist shot off the underside of the crossbar and past Vladar for his first USHL goal at 18:14 of the period.
The Ukrainian's first goal would not be celebrated for very long, though, as Tanner Laczynski, the overtime hero from the clubs' last meeting two weeks prior, took a pass from Brandon Duhaime and beat Metcalf with a wrist shot of his own just 15 seconds later to give Chicago a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
The late goal by Laczynski in the second would prove to be a back breaker, as the Steel followed it up with two more third period goals from Bachman to complete his hat trick and seal the 5-2 win. Ryan Edquist came on in relief of Metcalf after the hat-trick goal at 8:58 of the third, but the game's outcome was already in hand.
The Steel picked up their third victory over the Capitols in five meetings, while the Capitols lost their three-game win streak with the defeat.
The Capitols continue their lengthy span of road travels as they hop the bus to Lincoln tomorrow night for a second battle with the Stars from the Ice Box. Puck drop on Saturday at the Stars' home is slated for 7:05 p.m. with coverage on 106.7 FM, 1670 AM, The Zone in Madison.
