GENEVA, ILLINOIS - Steel right winger Karch Bachman tallied his first career USHL hat trick as the Chicago Steel (16-17-3-3, 38 points) came away with a 5-2 win over the Madison Capitols (15-18-2-2, 34 points) Friday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Veteran defenseman Trevor Hamilton tallied a goal in his first game as a member of the Steel since being traded from Muskegon on Tuesday.

The first period began with each team looking to assert its physical dominance. The physicality did come with repercussions though, as nine total penalties led to opportunities for both teams on the power play. Madison's Sam McCormick found space off a backdoor feed from Dmitri Buinitsky to score on an open net midway through the frame to open the scoring. Hamilton responded with the equalizer less than three minutes later. Jake Jaremko found Hamilton cutting toward the net, proceeding to drag the puck past the last Capitol defender and onto his backhand. He finished off the play by lifting the puck over the right shoulder of goalie Garrett Metcalf to even the score at 12:18. Despite multiple power play opportunities for each team, the score remained tied at 1-1 going into the first intermission.

In spite of the being shorthanded to start the second period, the Steel were the first to strike. Marc Johnstone picked the pocket of the last Capitol defender to start a two-on-none breakaway with teammate Karch Bachman. Johnstone veered left and waited for Metcalf to commit before playing a short, backhanded pass to Bachman who scored on an open net to give the Steel its first lead of the game just 42 seconds into the second period. Madison's Eugene Fadyeyev tied the game late in the period with his first USHL goal. Alec Broetzman connected with Fadyeyev trailing through the slot who rifled a one-time shot past the glove of netminder Daniel Vladar at 18:14. It took the Steel only 15 seconds to take back the lead. A cross-ice pass from Brandon Duhaime found its way to the stick of Tanner Laczynski who placed a wrist shot past the glove of Metcalf. The late goal gave the Steel a 3-2 advantage at the end of two periods.

Bachman effectively put the game away with two goals in the final period. Metcalf was able to make the save from Bachman's initial wrist shot from the top of the right circle, but could not locate the puck trickling toward the net. Bachman pounced on the opportunity and was able to follow up his own shot and poke in the rebound to give the steel a two goal lead at 7:01. Bachman finished off the hat trick by stealing the puck in the offensive zone, skating into the slot and placing a backhanded shot past the glove of Metcalf at 9:58.

Chicago has now recorded at least a point in eight of its last 10 games. The Steel held the Capitols to 19 shots on goal, their second straight game limiting their opponent to under 20 total shots on net.

The Steel are back in action Saturday night as they host to the Dubuque Fighting Saints at 7 p.m. for Ladies Night. Tickets are available at the box office inside Fox Valley Ice Arena, by phone at 855-51-STEEL or online at ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com.
