Late Comeback Falls Short for SC in Loss to Colorado

South Carolina forward Steve McParland scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season in the first period and later added two assists, while Stingrays defenseman Steve Weinstein netted his first tally of the year along with two additional helpers late in the game.

In addition, forwards Alex Gacek and Rob Flick each scored in the third period for South Carolina and ran their goal-scoring streaks to three games apiece.

McParland opened the scoring at 2:59 of the first period, taking a pass from forward Troy Power at the bottom of the left-hand circle and moving the puck from forehand to backhand before slipping it underneath Colorado goalie Clarke Saunders to make it 1-0. Forward Scott Tanski was credited with the second assist on the goal after starting the play by winning a battle in the corner.

The Eagles tied the game at 1-1 on forward Jackson Houck's first goal of the season at 10:05 of the first frame and then opened up a lead, scoring twice more in the opening period to make it 3-1. Defenseman Jake Marto had the second strike on the power play at 13:27, while forward Cole Sanford made it a two-goal game at 14:40.

Colorado extended its lead to 4-1 when Houck scored the only goal of the second period, his second of the game, at 13:02. The Eagles then made it 5-1 on Matt Garbowsky's fourth tally of the year at 9:37 of the third. While the game appeared out of reach for South Carolina, the Stingrays had other plans.

Tanski started the momentum and breathed life into his teammates by making it 5-2 with his second goal of the year at 15:42 of the third. Weinstein and McParland recorded assists on what look like a meaningless tally.

But 17 seconds later, Gacek struck on a wrist shot with assists from forward Kelly Zajac as well as Weinstein, and all of a sudden the game was back to 5-3 and the Rays were within two goals.

Flick ignited the crowd by making it 5-4 at 18:29, scoring his third of the year from both McParland and Zajac after head coach Ryan Warsofsky pulled goaltender Adam Carlson in favor of an extra attacker.

South Carolina again attempted to pull Carlson, but Eagles' defenseman Matt Register scored on the empty net to once again make it a two-goal game at 6-4.

After another empty net goal by Colorado forward Luke Salazar had made it 7-4 before Weinstein notched his first goal of the year with just 15 seconds remaining in the game to pull the Stingrays closer at 7-5. Power was credited with his second assist of the night, while Marcus Perrier was given the second assist.

South Carolina outshot Colorado 14-10 in the final frame, and had the edge in shots on goal in the contest, 33-32.

The Eagles converted on one out of five power plays in the game, while the Stingrays went 0-for-2 with the man-advantage. Saunders made 28 saves in the contest to earn the victory for Colorado, while Carlson made 25 saves in a losing effort. Both goaltenders allowed five goals in the game.

The two teams will meet for a third time in four days at the North Charleston Coliseum on Sunday afternoon at 3:05 p.m.
