ROYALS PRE-GAME NOTES -
Tonight, the Royals face the Manchester Monarchs for the fifth time this season. This evening's game is the third and final matchup in a three-game set at SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire, and is also the final game of the 2016-17 season for Reading in Manchester. o
The Royals and Monarchs will face each other a total of ten times over the course of the 2016-17 regular season. The final five games in the series will all be played in Reading.
-
So far, the Monarchs have won all four games played in the season series. Manchester knocked off the Royals twice at Santander Arena in Reading: 5-1 on October 21 and 6-4 on November 12. The Monarchs kicked off this current three-game set in Manchester with a 4-1 win over Reading on Wednesday morning; and followed that up with a 2-1 victory last night at SNHU Arena.
-
Friday night's loss dropped the Royals record to two games under .500 at 6-8-0-1 and pushed Reading into sole possession of fifth place in the North Division of the ECHL's Eastern Conference. o
This marks the first time this season that Reading's record has fallen two games below .500.
o
The last time that Reading's record was below .500 through fifteen games was in the 2008-09 season when the team started 5-9-0-1. It is only the fourth time in the sixteen year history of the team, that Reading has been under .500 through fifteen played. The other two were in: (i) 2001-02 (4-9-0-2); and (ii) 2006-07 (5-7-0-3).
-
The 2-1 loss last night also served to stretch the Royals' current losing streak to six games. This is the first time that Reading has lost six games in regulation in a row since the team record eight game losing streak in the 2008-09 season, which stretched from November 22 through December 6, 2008. o
This is actually the fourth time in team history that Reading has lost six or more in a row. In the inaugural season (2001-02), Reading was defeated six times in regulation in a row (02/01 - 02/10/02); and also in the second season that the Royals were in Reading (2002-03) (03/17 - 03/30/03). o
The team record for consecutive winless games is nine, which has occurred three times: (i) 03/09 - 03/29/02 (0-8-1-0); (ii) 11/21 - 12/06/08 (0-8-0-1); and (iii) 11/18 - 12/08/11 (0-5-2-2).
-
Friday's also served to stretch the Royals current road losing streak to a season-long four games. Overall, Reading is 5-5-0-1 through ten road games this season. At the conclusion of tonight's game, the Royals will have already completed one-third (twelve games) of the team's 2016-17 regular season road schedule. o
The team record for consecutive losses on the road is seven (01/22 - 03/02/10).
-
Reading's Chris McCarthy scored the game's first goal 6:58 into the second period last night. That marked the fifth time this year that the Royals have scored the FG and the second time that the team has lost when scoring first (3-2-0-0). Both of those losses have come to Manchester. (Reading also scored first in the 6-4 win for the Monarchs in Reading last Saturday night.) o
Last night's contest marked the fourth "blown lead loss" sustained by the Royals this season. In fact, Reading has held a lead, albeit for a relatively short period, in three of the last four games played. o
Last night, the Monarchs tied the game 2:46 after Reading had taken the 1-0 lead and scored what proved to be the game winner 16:48 into the second period. The Royals trailed for the final 23:12 of the game. o
When coupled with the 0:49 seconds total that Reading led in last Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Monarchs in Reading (0:15 at 1-0; and 0:34 at 2-1), the Royals have now led for a combined 3:35 in the four games played against Manchester, while the Monarchs have led for 134:44 of the 240 minutes of game time. o
Over the course of the 360 minutes of game time during this six game losing streak, the Royals have held the lead for 8:39, while the opposition has held the lead for 206:11.
-
Friday's game marked the fifth time this season that Reading's offense has been held to just one goal (0-5-0-0)- and the third time that Manchester has accomplished that feat. o
In the four games so far played against the Monarchs, Reading has been outscored 17-7. (The Royals are averaging 1.75 goals per game against Manchester). o
Reading has scored forty-nine goals through fourteen games this season, which is a 3.27 goals per game average, fourteenth best in the league.
-
Last night's contest marked the third time this season that Reading has held the opposition to two goals, which is the team season low. It is the first time that the team has done so since a 3-2 win over the Idaho Steelheads on October 26, a span of ten games. o
Friday's game was the first time this year that Reading has lost when holding the opposition to just two goals (2-1-0-0). o
Reading has allowed a total of 57 goals against, which is a 3.80 team goals against average (tied twenty- third in the league).
-
Last night's game marked the third time in the four game series in which Manchester has out-shot Reading (30- 27). Overall, the Monarchs are a plus-15 in the shot total (134 -119).
-
Reading's power play was held off the board in the two chances the team had last night with the man advantage. In the 4 games played so far between the Royals and Monarchs, Reading is 1-18 on the PP ( 5.6% scoring ratio). o
Overall, the Royals are 11 for 55 on the PP, which is a 20.0% scoring ratio (tenth in the league).
-
The Reading penalty killers knocked off all five chances on the power play for Manchester last night. That marked only the second time this season that the Royals' PK has blanked the opposition. o
The Monarchs have gone 5 for 20 on the PP in the four games against Reading this year (25.0%). o
Overall, Reading is killing penalties at a 69.5% clip (18 PPGAs in 59 opps) (twenty-seventh in the league.)
-
Chris McCarthy returned to action last night after a three-game absence due to injury and scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season (6g-7a). McCarthy is tied with Steven Swavely (5g-8a) and Olivier Labelle (5g-8a) for the team lead with thirteen points. o
Olivier Labelle picked up the primary assist on the lone goal scored by Reading. Labelle is riding a four- game assist streak (0g-4a). Labelle led the Royals last night with five shots on goal. o
Defenseman Nick Luukko recorded the secondary assist on the Royals' lone goal last night. All six of Luukko's points (3g-3a) have come in his last eight games.
-
Goaltender Mark Dekanich made twenty-eight saves in last night's loss. That marked the second time this year that Dekanich has held the opposition to just two goals. (He recorded the season opening 6-2 win for Reading over Elmira). o
Last night's game was the third consecutive start for Dekanich who has been the goaltender of record in five of the six losses in the Royals current skid. o
Overall, Dekanich has a record of 3-6-0-1 with a 3.58 goals against average and a .893 save percentage.
