Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - A late offensive surge was not enough as the Frederick Keys (18-30, 47-70) lost a 9-7 contest to the Down East Wood Ducks (29-19, 79-39) on Sunday afternoon at Nymeo Field. The Keys scored four runs in the eighth inning, capped off by a three-run home run from Patrick Dorrian and had room for more. With runners on second and third and two-outs, Diosbel Arias snagged a line-drive off the bat of Sean Miller that would have tied the game.
Trailing 9-3 in the eighth, the Keys capitalized on a pair of lead-off walks. Jomar Reyes knocked home a run and then Dorrian followed with a three-run blast to right field. Two more would reach but Joe Kuzia was able to retire the next three batters with the help of Arias.
Frederick got a double to start the ninth from Robert Neustrom but were unable to piece anything else together against Michael Matuella (S, 4).
The Wood Ducks struck early and scored three runs on a Yohel Pozo double and a base hit from Sherten Apostel. David Lebron worked a clean second inning after walking two batters but was pulled after that. Lebron walked four total and was charged with three runs on three hits.
The Keys came storming back against Noah Bremer (3-0) in the bottom of the second as five straight reached base. Dorrian knocked in Reyes after he doubled, and Daniel Fajardo snuck an infield single in with the bases loaded which scored a run and brought the Keys within one. Cole Billingsley then tied the game on an RBI groundout.
Bremer finished strong after that. He struck out seven over six innings, allowing the three runs on six hits.
After Sam Huff homered in the third to put Down East on top 4-3, the Wood Ducks got two-run singles from Curtis Terry and Apostel in the fourth inning off of Zach Matson (1-2). Matson took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits in 1.2 innings.
Luis Perez provided the Keys with much needed relief. He lasted a season-high 4.1 innings and gave up an unearned run on one hit while striking out three.
Both Dorrian and Apostel finished with four RBIs, while the Keys second baseman tallied three hits.
The Keys will enjoy an off day on Monday before heading to Salem for a quick three-game series starting Tuesday, August 13. LHP Cameron Bishop (1-8, 4.43) takes the mound for Frederick against LHP Enmanuel De Jesus (6-9, 4.12) for Salem in game one. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm with pregame coverage starting at 6:50pm on the Tune In app and frederickkeys.com.
