Woodpeckers Clinch Sweep over Dash on Sunday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Dash fell for the third straight game on Sunday afternoon, as the Fayetteville Woodpeckers earned a 4-2 victory and a series sweep at BB&T Ballpark.
The Woodpeckers (27-23, 58-61) struck first against Dash (22-27, 60-53) starter Taylor Varnell (0-1) in the top of the third inning. Jeremy Pena led off the frame by drawing a walk. Following a strikeout by Miguelangel Sierra, Corey Julks singled into center field to put runners at the corners. Then, Chandler Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to right field, making it 1-0 Fayetteville.
Winston-Salem responded in the bottom half of the inning against Jojanse Torres (6-0). To lead off the inning, Evan Skoug doubled down the right-field line before a Yeyson Yrizarri single put runners at the corners. Steele Walker then drew a walk to load the bases. The next batter, Johan Cruz, hit a sacrifice fly to right field, tying the contest at one.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Dash took the lead. With one out, Mitch Roman singled into right field. Then, Tate Blackman grounded out on a deflected ball, allowing Roman to reach third. Skoug then ripped a single off the glove of second baseman Enmanuel Valdez into right field to bring home Roman and make it 2-1.
However, Fayetteville went on to claim the lead in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Corey Julks hit a ground-rule double before Chandler Taylor walked. Then, Scott Schreiber tripled into center field, but a throwing error by the second baseman allowed everyone to score, giving the Woodpeckers a 4-2 lead.
In relief of Torres, Cesar Rosado and Humberto Castellanos allowed just one hit across four innings of work. Castellanos earned the save by pitching 1.1 scoreless frames to close out the ballgame.
Following an off day and a three-game series at Carolina, the Dash return for three games against the Potomac Nationals from August 16-18 at BB&T Ballpark. The series begins with Daddy-Daughter Date Night and a Fireworks Friday. Saturday's contest will be the final Chick-fil-A Four Pack Night of the season and feature live music prior to the game. The series finale will be a Latin American Jersey Day and a Lowes Foods Family Sunday. Kids Run the Bases, powered by New Balance Winston-Salem will take following all three games.
