Rocks Drop 1-0 Pitchers' Duel in 10 Innings
August 11, 2019 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Myrtle Beach, SC - On a night where offense was almost impossible to come by, the Wilmington Blue Rocks dropped a 1-0 walk-off decision in 10 innings to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Sunday at TicketReturn.com Field. The loss cost Wilmington its shot at a series sweep as the Blue Crew wrapped up their six-game road trip with a 4-2 record.
Myrtle Beach scored the game's only run versus Rocks reliver Josh Dye. The Pelicans started the bottom of the 10th with a runner in scoring position per Minor League Baseball rules. Delvin Zinn was given an intentional walk and then he and Jose Gutierrez quickly moved up a base each on Dye's wild pitch. Aramis Ademan followed with a free pass to load the bases and then Wladimir Galindo sent the fans home happy with a game-winning single to right.
In the top of the 10th the Rocks left a runner at third, one of six Wilmington stranded on the night. The Blue Crew offense finished the contest just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The offensive futility squandered an excellent pitching performance. The trio of Rito Lugo, Robert Garcia and Collin Snider combined to keep the Pelicans off the scoreboard over their first nine trips to the plate.
The Rocks enjoy a night off on Monday before opening three-game homestand against Lynchburg on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. Tickets are available online at BlueRocks.com and fans who can't make it to the game can catch all the action with the Voice of the Blue Rocks, Cory Nidoh, on 89.7 WGLS-FM.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
Four has been the magic number for the Blue Rocks in 2019. When Wilmington scores four or more runs the team is 42-7, but when the offense produces three tallies or fewer they are just 26-43.
The loss ended Wilmington's string of eight straight victories over the Pelicans. The eight-game streak equaled the Blue Crew's longest winning streak against an opponent this year. Wilmington also was victorious eight consecutive times against Carolina at one stage in 2019.
The Royals added Delaware native Tyler Hill to the Wilmington roster on Friday morning and he did not waste any time proving his hometown team just how valuable he can be. The outfielder went 8-for-11 with a homer and two doubles during the three-game series at Myrtle Beach. Originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 19th round of the 2014 Hill was selected by the Tigers in the Minor League phase of the Rule 5 Draft. Detroit turned around and traded him to the Yankees for cash and then New York released him in June. Hill was born in Wilmington and graduated from the Delaware Military Academy.
