Potomac Nationals News Release
Woodbridge, VA - On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Potomac Nationals (57-60, 24-24) got stellar pitching from LHP Carson Teel (L, 6-4), RHP Gabe Klobosits, and RHP Frankie Bartow, but managed next to no offense against the combination of RHP Brock Hartson (W, 1-1) and RHP Justin Garza (SV, 1) in a 1-0 loss to the Lynchburg Hillcats (56-59, 24-24). The win for the Hillcats capped off a series sweep that saw an extra innings win, a blowout win, and Sunday's tight matchup.
For the first time in the series, the P-Nats held Lynchburg scoreless over the first two innings. That run continued into the fourth frame when Teel surrendered a one-out double to LF Will Benson. Before Teel threw another pitch, he had Benson picked off at second base. Benson got caught in a rundown between second and third base, but the throw to third base from 2B Kyle Marinconz deflected off of Benson and rolled into foul territory. The throwing error on Marinconz allowed Benson to score, which made it 1-0 Lynchburg, the eventual final. Teel allowed just one unearned run over six innings in the loss. Potomac had eight errors over the three-game series.
Potomac didn't have many scoring chances on the afternoon. 1B Aldrem Corredor tallied a two-out double in the first inning but made it no further than second base. The P-Nats got the leadoff hitter on base in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frames, but none of the three baserunners even made it into scoring position. Potomac went 0-3 with RISP and left six runners on base in the loss.
After six innings from Teel, Klobosits worked two scoreless innings, while Bartow followed with a perfect ninth frame. Out of the bullpen for Lynchburg, Garza allowed three hits over three innings and closed out the Hillcats' sweep. Potomac got singles from Corredor and DH Austin Davidson in the final inning, but Garza got RF Gage Canning to fly out to left field to end the game, as the Hillcats finished off the sweep with a 1-0 win.
With three consecutive losses at home, the P-Nats will head into Monday's off day in second place in the Northern Division, either 0.5 or 1.5 games behind the Salem Red Sox. Tuesday night, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Chicago Cubs) will make their first visit to Northwest Federal Field in 2019. The Pelicans will play at The Pfitz Tuesday night, Wednesday night, and Thursday night, and then again August 26th-29th.
First pitch at Northwest Federal Field at Pfitzner Stadium on Tuesday night is set for 7:05pm. The Potomac broadcast will get underway at 6:50pm with the P-Nats Leadoff Show. You can listen to the Potomac broadcast at potomacnationals.com or on the TuneIn Radio App.
