Kalamazoo Wings News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, IN- The Kalamazoo Wings were led by a two-goal night from Anthony Camara, but couldn't hurdle a three-goal third period from the Indy Fuel in a 5-3 loss on Wednesday night at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
The Wings came out of the gates with tremendous pace in the opening period during their first visit to Indy since April 8, 2015, and generated a multitude of opportunities, but each were answered by Fuel netminder Jake Hildebrand. 200 feet away, Kalamazoo's Nick Riopel was equally efficient in his goal, steering away all seven efforts he faced from Indy.
Early in the second, the Fuel were paced by the reigning ECHL Player of the Week Alex Wideman and took the game's first lead. After a tied-up puck at the faceoff dot was freed and tapped to him in the high slot, Wideman ripped a wrist shot over the outstretched right leg of Riopel.
Less than two minutes later, Kalamazoo equalized the game after Tanner Sorenson's remarkable individual effort carried him coast to coast, through two defenders at the blue line, and into an attacking area where he generated enough space to uncork a slap shot that beat Hildebrand over the glove.
Six minutes after Sorenson tied the game for the Wings, Anthony Camara gave Kalamazoo the lead with a quick strike near the Fuel goal. Eric Kattleus won a draw to Dajon Mingo, who dished to Camara for Kalamazoo's second tally of the night and Camara's fourth of the season.
As the game transitioned into the third and tied at two, it was Indy that jumped back into the lead during the first few minutes as Matt Rupert generated his third goal of the season and propelled the Fuel to a one-goal edge.
Midway through the period and both teams skating in a four-on-four situation, Wideman sprung the attack behind the Kalamazoo defense with a stretch pass that cleared Tvrdon for a breakaway. Closing in on Riopel, Tvrdon tucked a shot between Riopel's legs and into the goal, lifting Indy to a 4-2 lead.
With time winding down, a picturesque passing play from Tyler Shattock to Eric Kattelus freed up Camara on the wing to receive the puck and dance his way towards the goal, deking Hildebrand and sliding the puck over the line for his second goal of the night.
With Kalamazoo trailing by a goal and Riopel on the bench for an extra attacker, they established pressure in the Indy zone and peppered Hildebrand with chances. The Fuel goaltender made a series of timely saves, and Kevin Lynch tacked on an empty net goal with .1 seconds remaining on the clock, sealing a 5-3 victory.
