Furious Third Period Comback Falls Short against Quad City

Cincinnati, OH- The Cincinnati Cyclones (7-7-2-0) fell to the Quad City Mallards, 4-2 on Wednesday night. Defenseman Eric Knodel and forward Kenny Ryan tallied the goals for the Cyclones.

The Mallards controlled the flow of play in the first period, outshooting the Cyclones 13-2 in the frame. Quad City received goals from defenseman Guillaume Gelinas and forward Chris Francis to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes.

The Cyclones started to turn the tide offensively in the second getting a number of quality scoring chances, however an early period goal from Quad City's Sam Warning put the Mallards up, 3-0, after the second.

Cincinnati came out strong in the third and cut their deficit to two goals while on the power play, as a pass from forward Andrew Yogan found Knodel at the line and he blasted a shot past Quad City netminder Adam Vay to pull the Cyclones to within a pair, 3-1.

The Cyclones continued to chip away at Quad City's lead, and 8:10 into the final frame forward Nick Huard sent a pass from below the goal line to Ryan who sniped a shot off of the crossbar and into the net to cut Cincinnati's deficit to 3-2.

The physicality picked up midway through the frame, as Cyclones forward Rob De Fulviis and defenseman Arvin Atwal both dropped the gloves in separate tilts.

Cincinnati continued to get quality of chances offensively, however Warning's second goal of the night at the 12:12 mark of the period put the Mallards ahead, 4-2.

Cincinnati had a couple more Grade A chances later in the frame with the goaltender pulled, but Vay stopped the Cyclones' comeback and held on for a 4-2 Quad City win.

The Cyclones were outshot, 28-24 on the night, with goaltenders Michael Houser and Joel Rumpel combining to stop 24 in the loss. Cincinnati hits the road for a pair of games against the Reading Royals beginning on Saturday night. Face-off is slated for 7:00pm ET.
