With three runs in their final at-bat the Calgary Vipers defeated the Edmonton Capitals 8-5 in the second game of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. In a back and forth contest Calgary took an early 2-0 lead before falling behind 4-2 and retaking a 5-4 advantage in the fifth inning. After giving up a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5 the Vipers scored three times in the seventh to snap a four game losing streak. With the win the Snakes improve to 22-11 on the second half and hold a three games lead over the Victoria Seals for first place in the North Division with 12 games remaining. Overall Calgary's record improves to 45-31 on the Golden Baseball League season.
Scott Watson (2-0) recorded the win after throwing a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts while Claudio Galva (18) picked up the save with a scoreless seventh including two punch outs as well.
Calgary opened up the scoring in the second inning when Julio Ramirez walked and Drew Miller hit his 17th home run of the year for a 2-0 advantage.
With two outs in the third Edmonton responded as Ryan Stevenson and Enrique Cruz singled, Tom Collaro walked, and Larry Bigbie hit a grand slam for a 4-2 lead.
The Vipers answered back in the fifth frame when Jonny Kaplan singled, Brent Metheny doubled, and Ramirez launched a three-run shot for his 15th home run of the season and a 5-4 advantage.
The Capitals quickly tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning as Alex Chavez doubled and scored on a Cruz RBI single.
In the top of the seventh Calgary retook the lead at 8-5 when Guillermo Reyes singled, Ramirez reached on a fielding error, and with two outs Luis Taveras singled both home followed by a RBI base hit from Jorge Mejia.
This six-game series in Edmonton against the Capitals concludes on Monday August 23rd at 7:00 PM MDT.
The Snakes return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Thursday August 26th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Victoria Seals for Chick Wagon Night, Friday August 27th at 7:05 PM MDT for Small Town Spirit Night, Saturday August 28th at 5:05 PM MDT for Winnipeg Night, and Sunday August 29th at 1:35 PM MDT for Fan Appreciation Day.
