Outlaws Hit Early And Often; Show No Aloha In 11-3 Win

August 22, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Chico Outlaws News Release

Chico, CA - All it took for the Chico Outlaws to break out the sticks and start hitting was a pre-batting practice burning of old batting gloves, cleats and a bat in an old trash can. Chico broke out of their nine-game home losing skid in a big way, pounding out 17 hits in an 11-3 win over the Maui Na Koa Ikaika on Saturday night at Nettleton Stadium.

Chico, wearing special blue uniform tops with the number "62" on them to honor the late Lance Utterback, a Chico Police Department officer who passed away from cancer, scored four runs in the first inning and cruised from there behind a strong pitching performance from former big leaguer Mark McLemore. Going six innings, McLemore (7-4) allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with two strikeouts to help the home team snap Maui's ten game winning streak.

Five Outlaws had multi-hit games, while first baseman John Urick and catcher Robby Alcombrack each hit solo homeruns in the third inning.

David Seccombe (4-3) started for Maui and got knocked around to the tune of seven earned runs on nine hits before coming out of the game in the third inning with two outs. Relievers Steve Spurgeon and ex-major leaguer Jerry Spradlin gave up two runs apeice as well as the Outlaws took a game from Maui for the first time ever.

Michael Higa and Mark Okano had RBI singles for the Strong Warriors, while Chester Wilson scored a run when third baseman Santo DeLeon committed an error in the second inning.

Garret Holleran pitched two innings in relief of McLemore, retiring all six hitters he faced, while David Dinelli pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to slam the door on the Na Koa Ikaika.

Chico climbed back to an even .500 for the second half at 15-15 with the win (48-27 overall), while Maui fell to 19-5 in the second half and 45-22 overall. With the Orange County win over Yuma earlier on Saturday night, Maui is now in second place in the GBL South.

The Outlaws now have three days off before resuming play with a five-game series with the St George Roadrunners starting Wednesday at the Nett. Kris Honel (7-2, 3.08) will start for Chico.

The game will be broadcast live on the Outlaws Baseball Network at 7:05 pm. Fans can catch all the action with Dan Hawkins starting at 6:50 pm. Watch live on www.justin.tv.com/chicooutlawsbaseball or audio only at www.chicooutlaws.com.
