Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals and Calgary Vipers are doing an excellent job of igniting a provincial rivalry this weekend, as they held another fiercely contested battle in the first half of their double-header on Sunday at TELUS Field.
The Vipers exploded out of the gate with five runs in the first inning, but the Caps put up three runs of their own in both the third and fifth innings to take a 6-5 lead. Calgary's Jonny Kaplan then hit a home run in the seventh to force extra innings in the shortened affair, but the Caps finally prevailed with a run in the 13th inning to win 7-6.
Caps starting pitcher Evan White gave up five runs on just two hits in the first inning, thanks to a throwing error and two hit batters leading to a three-run double by Luis Tavares and a two-run home run by Jorge Mejia. But the Caps cut the lead to 5-3 in the third as first baseman Tom Collaro crushed a two-run home run and second baseman Matt Rogelstad hit an RBI double.
Edmonton then took a one-run lead in the fifth as third baseman Alex Prieto drove in a pair with a double and right fielder Steve Brown knocked in Prieto with a single. Caps closer Chad Blackwell couldn't shut the door on the Vipers in the seventh, though, giving up the home run to Kaplan.
The teams battled back and forth for five scoreless innings until the Caps finally scored the go-ahead run on a costly error by Vipers pitcher Brant Stickel. With left fielder Kevin House on third and Prieto on first, pitcher Mike Johnson hit a dribbler to the pitcher, but he couldn't get a grip on the ball and his eventual throw wasn't in time to record the out, allowing House to score.
Johnson picked up the win for the Caps for the second straight game, throwing the final five innings and giving up just one hit, while striking out five Vipers. The teams will begin the second half of their double-header at approximately 6:45 p.m.
