Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals continued a three-game series with their division rivals, the St. George Roadrunners in a Saturday night contest at Royal Athletic Park. Victoria sent Isaac Hess (3-3) to the mound, while St. George countered with Todd McGee (0-0).
Victoria wasted no time in opening the scoring for the second straight game, as Wilver Perez hit a lead-off solo home run for the 1-0 advantage.
The Victoria bats came alive in the second inning with three runs on three hits and two errors. Matt Kavanaugh led off the inning with a walk from starting pitcher McGee, with Jerry Madueno and Hess following up with back to back doubles. Hess would be sent home when right fielder Chris Brown overthrew third base, with the ball bouncing into the crowd. Henry Calderon, Terrence McClain, and Josh Arhart finished off the scoring for the inning with a walk, an error from the second baseman, and a single respectively.
Extending their lead in the fourth frame, the Seals got singles from Calderon, Arhart, and Colin Moro, with McClain getting hit by a pitch, and Kavanaugh advancing to first on an error from third baseman, Nick Fitzgerald. The two runs were scored on a sacrifice fly from Brian Rios, and a single from Moro, for the 5-0 Victoria lead.
St. George would get their first hit of the game in the sixth, after Seals' starter Hess had a no hitter with seven strikeouts through the first five innings. Hess would walk the first two batters he faced, with Chris Brown hitting an RBI single after Jason Cramer hit into the 4-6-3 double play. Brown would advance to third to load the bases after Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch, and Matt Huggins registered a single. With the bases loaded, Keenan Long would advance to first on the walk, bringing home Brown from third to make it a 6-2 ball game.
Both teams exchanged runs in the seventh with the Roadrunners' scoring on a sacrifice fly from the bat of Brown. While the Seals would score on a fielder's choice from McClain, to take a 7-3 lead into the eighth.
Attempting the comeback in the eighth inning, were the Roadrunners with back-to-back singles from Fitzgerald, and Long. Pinch hitter Chris Juarez would bring home Fitzgerald on a fielder's choice off of reliever Mike Koons. However that is as close as St. George would get as Victoria closer Brandon Villafuerte came into the game in the ninth to record the save and hand the Seals a 7-4 victory.
Isaac Hess improved to 4-3, allowing two runs on two hits with seven strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Todd McGee recorded the loss going two innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Josh Arhart contributed three hits in five at bats for the Seals. While Chris Brown went 1-for-3 with two RBI's in a losing effort for the Roadrunners.
The Seals and Roadrunners wrap-up their three game set tomorrow afternoon at Royal Athletic Park. Game time is slated for 1:35 p.m. (PT), and tickets are available by calling (250) 220-7777, or online via www.victoriaseals.ca.
