Vipers Finally Figure Out Caps In Nightcap

August 22, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Marathon wasn't the only marathon sporting event held on Sunday in the city, as the Edmonton Capitals and Calgary Vipers played 20 innings and more than seven hours of baseball.

The Caps and Vipers had a Golden Baseball League double-header scheduled at TELUS Field, in order to make up for a game that was rained out in Calgary earlier this season. The games were supposed to be seven innings each, but the Caps ended up winning the opener 7-6 in 13 innings, and the Vipers prevailed 8-5 in the nightcap.

With the score tied 5-5 heading into the seventh inning of the second game, Calgary catcher Luis Tavares drove in a pair of runs on a two-out single and Jorge Mejia knocked him in with a single to make it 8-5. Vipers closer Claudio Galva then came in and shut down the Caps three straight in the bottom half.

Two Caps were responsible for driving in the team's five runs in the game, as short stop Enrique Cruz extended his impressive hitting streak to 25 games with an RBI single in the fifth, and left fielder Larry Bigbie launched a grand slam in the third. Vipers centre fielder Julio Ramirez had a huge night, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and three driven in.

The Sunday split means the Caps weren't able to gain any more ground on the Vipers in the race for first place in the North Division. Calgary (22-11) still holds down the top spot, while the Caps (17-16) are five games behind.

The six-game Battle of Alberta series concludes Monday night with a 7 p.m. start, and it's another edition of Carpool Mondays, as fans who have more than four people in their vehicle will be allowed to park for free.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
