Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals continued to gain important ground on the Calgary Vipers on Saturday night as they came from behind to post a thrilling 7-6 victory.

After the Vipers scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take a slim 6-5 advantage, the Caps rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, and closer Chad Blackwell tossed a three-up-three-down ninth to seal the victory and record his 16th save of the year. Reliever Mike Johnson picked up his first win since rejoining the Caps last Sunday.

Short stop Enrique Cruz went 2-for-4 on the night with two runs scored and one RBI, extending his hitting streak to 23 games. His second hit of the game proved to be huge, as he led off the eighth with a double, and first baseman Tom Collaro followed it up with a double of his own to drive in the tying run. Second baseman Matt Rogelstad then walked with the bases loaded to drive in the eventual game-winner.

"We know this is an important series - the season is basically on the line - so we really don't have any other option than to play with a sense of urgency with our backs against the wall," Rogelstad said of the Caps' resilience. "We've got a no-panic attitude right now and that's leading to some timely hits."

The current series against Calgary is so crucial for the Caps (16-15), as they are now five games back of the Vipers (21-10) for first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division in the second half with only two weeks remaining. The Caps must finish ahead of the Vipers to qualify for the post-season. The provincial rivals are now halfway through their six-game series and will take to the diamond for two more games on Sunday with a double-header starting at 2 p.m. at TELUS Field. The series concludes Monday night with a 7 p.m. start.

Sunday's double-header is an extra special day for the Caps, as it's Canadian Tire Fan Appreciation Day. In addition to getting two games for the price of one thanks to the double-header, there will be plenty of prizes up for grabs, including two $250 gift certificates, and other give-aways from Caps sponsors like United Cycle, Family Vision Care, Hudsons Canadian Tap House, Old Dutch and Booster Juice. It's also Edmonton Sun Autograph Sunday, as the entire Caps team will be available for autographs after the game.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
