Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals closed out a three-game series with North division rivals, the St. George Roadrunners in a Sunday afternoon contest at Royal Athletic Park. Taking to the mound for Victoria was Jino Gonzalez (6-5), who matched up against Jeremy Atkins (0-0) for St. George
For the first time this series, St. George opened the scoring in the first frame to take a 2-0 advantage. Cody McMorris would hit a lead-off double followed by a single from Chris Juarez. The two base runners then attempted a double steal with a throwing error from pitcher Gonzalez allowing McMorris to come home with Juarez moving to third. Gabe DeMarco then hit an RBI double to round out the scoring for the top half of the inning.
Victoria added a run of their own in the first, with Henry Calderon hitting a solo home run. The Seals would add another home run in the second inning when Matt Kavanaugh hit a two-run blast after a single by Brian Rios.
Adding insurance in the third, Victoria would score four runs on five hits to chase Roadrunners' starter Atkins from the game. Following a walk to Terrence McClain, were back-to-back singles from Josh Arhart, and Rios. After McClain was caught stealing at third, Colin Moro advanced to first on a walk, followed by Kavanaugh hitting a two-run double. Reliever Ben Hildreth then took the mound for St. George, giving up back-to-back RBI singles to Matt Edgecombe and Gonzalez, for the 7-2 Victoria lead.
The Seals walked away with the game in the bottom half of the fifth, scoring six runs on four hits and one error. After consecutive walks to Rios and Moro, Kavanaugh and Gonzalez would each hit RBI singles to score Rios to score both base-runners. Perez would then advance to first on an error from relief pitcher, Chuck Tiffany, that allowed Kavanaugh cross home plate. After back-to-back RBI singles by Calderon, and McClain, Jerry Madueno hit a fielder's choice to give Victoria a 13-2 advantage.
St. George recorded their third run of the game in the sixth frame, when singles from Nick Fitzgerald, and Jason Cramer, were followed by an RBI single from pinch-hitter Damarii Saunderson.
Showing no signs of slowing down, were the Seals adding another two runs in the seventh inning. Perez and Calderon both got on base with errors from shortstop Cramer, and centre fielder McMorris respectively. After an RBI single from McClain, Rios would hit a single to centre field to load the bases. Reliever Matt Litzinger would then walk Moro, to give the Seals a 15-3 lead.
