Las Vegas Boys Go Long for the Win

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS - Edwar Cabrera tossed a season-high eight shutout frames, and a pair of late-inning long balls supplied the necessary run support for the Frisco RoughRiders, who locked down the Arkansas Travelers 2-0 on Thursday night.

Joey Gallo snapped a scoreless deadlock on the first pitch of the eighth inning when he drilled an offering from David Carpenter over the fence in right-center field.

It was Gallo's 30th home run of the season, the most in Minor League Baseball, and ninth with the RoughRiders. The slugger leads Triple-A Iowa's Kris Bryant by two for the overall lead and already ranks ninth in the Texas League after just 21 games played in Double-A.

The 'Riders tried to add to their advantage, but the Travs threw Trever Adams out at the plate on a 6-2 fielder's choice and Edwin Garcia proceeded to line into a 3-6 twin killing to end the inning.

Despite the missed opportunity, Drew Robinson knocked in a dire insurance run when he blasted a 0-2 pitch from Jairo Diaz out of the park for his seventh home run of the season.

The ringers from Gallo and Robinson, both prospects from the Las Vegas area, provided much-needed run support for Cabrera, who procured perhaps his finest outing of the season.

Cabrera (4-6) coughed up just three hits (all singles) over eight innings and countered seven strikeouts with one walk. The southpaw from BanÃ-, Dominican Republic lowered his ERA to 3.07 on the season with 73 strikeouts and 26 bases on ball.

Carpenter (2-1), a pitcher with 43 innings of big-league experience, took the loss. The home run to Gallo was the first run allowed by Carpenter in his last 16 innings pitched.

Randy Henry earned his first save with the 'Riders in 2014. He conceded one hit in four batters faced. Frisco's two pitchers did not allow a run into scoring position the entire night.

Both teams left ten men stranded in the opener, and the trend carried over into Thursday's showdown.

The 'Riders forsook potential runs in each of the first four innings and twice left multiple runners aboard in that span.

In the fourth inning, Odubel Herrera and Teodoro Martinez reached with consecutive one-out singles off Arkansas starter Kramer Sneed.

An error on Arkansas third baseman Kaleb Cowart allowed Edwin Garcia to reach and load up the bases with one away.

However, Robinson struck out and Ryan Strausborger bounced to second to leave the bases packed and keep the game scoreless in the fourth.

With the win, Frisco (46-35; 6-6) remains undefeated in the state of Arkansas this season (8-0) and wins three games in a row for the first time since June 6. The 'Riders tally their ninth shutout of 2014, tied for first in the Texas League with San Antonio.

Arkansas (42-42; 8-6) falls to 17-25 at home on the year and 4-7 against the RoughRiders.
