Springfield Cardinals News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hooks escaped with a series-opening win, 3-2, against the Springfield Cardinals before 5,256 fans at Whataburger Field on Wednesday.
The Hooks (5-8, 39-44) charged in front right out of the gates, opening a three-run lead in the bottom of the first inning against RHP Mike Mayers (L, 1-2). With runners at the corners and one down, the Hooks pulled off a successful double steal with CF Delino DeShields racing home and RF Andrew Aplin nabbing second base. 3B Jonathan Meyer then brought in Aplin with an RBI double to right, before moving to third base on a bunt single from LF Leo Heras. An RBI sacrifice fly from 1B Brandon Meredith capped the rally for the 3-0 lead.
The Cardinals (5-8, 39-44) started the comeback in the top of the fourth against LHP David Rollins (W, 2-2). With one away and DH Curt Smith at second base, 1B Jonathan Rodriguez punched an RBI single to right-center, bringing in Smith to chip it to just a 3-1 deficit.
While Mayers kept the Hooks at three runs, Springfield continued to chip away with another tally in the top of the sixth. With one down, Smith crushed a solo home run to left field, bringing the Cardinals within just one run of tying it, 3-2.
Mayers finished his outing with a scoreless bottom of the sixth, dealing five scoreless frames after the first inning. He ended with five strikeouts through his six total stanzas. RHP Mitch Harris then followed with a pair of scoreless innings to keep the Cardinals within one.
However, the Hooks also received scoreless relief from LHP Alex Sogard (1.2 innings) and RHP Tyson Perez (S, 3), who dealt 1.1 frames to close the 3-2 win for Corpus Christi.
