Springfield Cardinals News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - The Corpus Christi Hooks dealt the final blow with three runs in the fifth en route to the 4-2 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 6,735 fans at Whataburger Field on Thursday night.
After LHP Jonathan Cornelius (L, 7-6) kept the Hooks (6-8, 40-44) hitless through the first 3.1 frames, Corpus Christi cracked the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth. With CF Delino DeShields, Jr. on at second and one down, 3B Jonathan Meyer lined an RBI single to right field for the 1-0 advantage.
The Cardinals (5-9, 39-45) responded right away against RHP Jordan Jankowski (L, 2-3) in the top of the fifth. 3B Matt Williams won a nine-pitch plate appearance to lead off the inning with a walk, before RF Starlin Rodriguez unloaded a two-run home run over the left field fence to lift the Cardinals ahead, 2-1.
The Hooks, though, moved right back in front in the bottom of the fifth. SS Jio Mier sparked the charge with a double to start the inning. After a walk from C Rene Garcia, DH Telvin Nash tied it with an RBI single to left field. Both runners moved up ninety feet on a sacrifice bunt by 2B Tony Kemp, followed by a walk from DeShields, Jr. to load the bases. RF Andrew Aplin then drove an RBI single to center, before Meyer capped the rally with an RBI groundout, stretching the new Hooks lead to 4-2.
The Cardinals remained close with two innings of scoreless relief from RHP Chris Thomas and one scoreless stanza by RHP Ronnie Shaban. However, the Hooks also received scoreless work from their bullpen, with RHP Michael Hauschild logging three innings and RHP Travis Ballew (S, 4) closing the 4-2 Corpus Christi win with a scoreless ninth.
