Lancaster Stormers News Release
It took John Brownell 128 pitches, but the Long Island Ducks workhorse went the distance on a four-hit shutout Tuesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
It was the second consecutive night where the Lancaster Barnstormers dropped a 5-0 decision to the Ducks.
Brownell (7-2) checked the Barnstormers on four singles Tuesday evening. He walked two and struck out five in the shutout.
He was backed by a pair of unearned runs off Joe Gardner (3-2) in the fifth, driven home by a Prentice Redman double and Bryan Sabatella single.
Jon Griffin added a two-run homer, his 10th of the season, for the Ducks in the sixth.
Lancaster's singles came in pairs, giving the Barnstormers opportunities to score.
In the first inning, Yusuke Kajimoto and Kevin Rivers knocked out consecutive one-out hits to give Lancaster runners at the corners with one out. Brownell coaxed a 4-6-3 double play out of Mike McDade on his next pitch.
In the fifth, after Long Island had grabbed a 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs, Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Juan Apodaca stroked ground ball base hits with one out. Brownell skipped a pitch past batterymate Mike Blanke to push the runners ahead another base.
Anderson Feliz fouled out to first and Zach Collier skied to shallow right to end the threat.
Over the final four innings, the Barnstormers managed one walk and had another runner reach on an error. Both were canceled by an immediate double play.
The two clubs wrap up the series on Thursday evening. Lancaster will send newcomer Ray Hanson to the hill against right-hander Bobby Blevins (1-0). Both are right-handers. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; rumba1390.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
NOTES: The loss was the record setting 10th shutout against the Barnstormers this season and the fourth complete-game whitewash against Lancaster, also a record...Griffin's homer was only the fifth against the Barnstormers' pitching staff in 16 games...It was the fourth pair of back-to-back shutouts suffered by the club this season...C Keith Castillo was reinstated to the active roster prior to the game.
