Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Bridgeport, CT - July 15, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (4-1, 30-45) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (4-1, 46-29) 4-2 at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Wednesday afternoon. Bridgeport has now won six of seven games overall, while snapping Southern Maryland's six game winning streak.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Scott Maine (3-5) earned the victory, tossing five and two-thirds innings, giving up one run on four hits, walking three and striking out five. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Brian Grening (3-5) suffered the loss, pitching seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking three and striking out three while surrendering one home run. Patrick Mincey closed the game out with his team-leading 12th save of the season.
Bridgeport took the 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning off Grening as Welington Dotel grounded into a double-play, but Josh Prince crossed the plate with the game's first run after he led off the frame with his sixth double of the campaign. Southern Maryland would answer right back in the next half inning off Maine, as Jake Opitz laced a run-scoring single to center field, scoring Gustavo Molina with the tying-run after he opened the top of the second with a double. The Blue Crabs were set up for an even bigger rally with runners at the corners and one out, but Maine kept the game tied as Grant Zawadzki lined into a double play to end the threat.
In the bottom of the third inning, Bridgeport would regain the lead and never look back. Andres Rodriguez singled with one out, and that brought up Wilson Batista, who launched a two-run home run to right field off Grening to give Bridgeport the 3-1 edge. It was the first hit for Batista as a member of the 'Fish, who was acquired in a trade from the Lancaster Barnstormers on July 13th. The Bluefish added a much needed insurance run in the eighth inning on an RBI groundout by Jobduan Morales off Southern Maryland reliever Tim Sexton, scoring Welington Dotel who reached on an infield single with one out. Dotel eventually stole third, his league-leading 25th bag swiped, and the insurance run on Morales' ground ball made it 4-1 Bridgeport. Dotel extending his hitting streak to a team-high 13 consecutive games. Mincey finished the game off with his fourth save in the last five games. Dotel led the offensive attack for the Bluefish with two hits.
The Bluefish close out their series with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Thursday, July 16th in a single-admission doubleheader. Both games are slated for seven innings. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a 1998 Back to the Future T-Shirt.
