Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - It was a night the ValleyCats are going to want to put behind them quickly, as the Lake Monsters scored seven unearned runs to defeat the 'Cats 9-8 in 11 innings on Sunday night in Burlington.

The four-hour 19-minute marathon ended on an extra inning walk-off single by Vermont left fielder Payton Squier.

With Vermont's victory, the 'Cats fall to 8-8 on the season, and the Lake Monsters improve to 9-7, giving them a one game lead over the ValleyCats for first place in the Stedler Division.

The ValleyCats got on the board first thanks to a solo shot in the second inning by Luis Encarnacion, his second home run of the season. They then extended their lead in the third on an RBI single off the bat of Alex McKenna, making it 2-0.

In the fifth, Vermont pushed across four runs on two singles, while also being aided by two ValleyCats defensive errors, a wild pitch and a hit batter.

It was Encarnacion again who came through big-time for the 'Cats in the sixth, stroking a clutch double to center to score three runs for a 5-4 lead. Encarnacion would score later that inning on a passed ball to extend their advantage to 6-4.

Vermont answered in the bottom half, scoring twice to tie the ballgame at six a piece, which is how it stood through the end of the ninth inning.

It was the first time all season that the ValleyCats had entered extra frames, and the first they would experience the new Minor League Baseball rule of starting a runner at second base during extra innings.

It was Jeremy Pena that began the top of the 10th at second, as he was the last ValleyCats batter to record an out. A ground out to first by Alex McKenna advanced Pena to third, and then Gilberto Celestino singled him home to give the 'Cats a 7-6 lead.

The 'Cats would tack on another to make it 8-6, but they couldn't hold the lead, as Vermont tied the ballgame in the bottom half of the 10th, followed by their walk-off hit in the 11th.

These two teams will square off again on Monday and Tuesday night in Vermont, followed by three more at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on July 4th through 6th. Tickets for the ValleyCats 4th of July homestand are available at tcvalleycats.com. Fireworks are scheduled for both July 4th and 5th.
