ABERDEEN, MD - Catcher Alfredo Gonzalez went 3-4 with two RBI and a five-run third inning by Aberdeen erased an early deficit en route to a 8-4 win over the Hudson Valley Renegades Sunday afternoon from Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium.
The Renegades started fast in the first by plating two runs. After drawing a one-out walk, shortstop Tanner Dodson scored from first on a single to center from Tyler Frank and subsequent fielding error from Ironbirds centerfielder Doran Turchin. Frank went to second on they play, then scored as catcher Chris Betts beat out an infield single to short. Frank, hustling from second, was able to score on the play as Betts beat the throw to first.
Aberdeen got a run back in the bottom-half as Willy Yahn delivered a two-out groundball single to left to bring in Robbie Thornburn who had reached second on a one-out double.
The Ironbirds took control of the game by scoring five more in the third. Back-to-back hit batsmen and a walk from Hudson Valley Blake Pflughaupt loaded the bases with nobody out when Robert Neustrom grounded into a 4-6 fielder's choice to drive in a run. With runners at the corners and one away, Yahn lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score a second run and push Aberdeen to a 3-2 lead. A single and walk reloaded the bases with two away when Pflughaupt was lifted for reliever Jesus Ortiz. The right-hander promptly forced in a run on a walk to Turchin before Gonzalez slapped a groundball single to center to score the final two runs of the inning and up the Ironbirds' lead to 6-2.
Hudson Valley scored a run in the fifth on a 6-4 fielder's choice from Dodson with one out and runners at first and third. However, Aberdeen responded the next half-inning on a two-run homer to right from Luke Ringhofer to increase Aberdeen's lead to 8-3.
The Renegades got the final run of the game in the sixth on a one-out double to left from David Parrett, which scoredMarvin Malone from first to make the final tally 8-4.
