Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
(State College, PA) - The Mahoning Valley Scrappers dropped their fourth game of the season on Sunday evening. Despite an early lead, the Scrappers fell 5-2 to the State College Spikes. The Scrappers did get the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but could not complete the comeback.
The Scrappers took the early lead with a run in the top of the first. With two outs Mitch Reeves doubled to drive in Richie Palacios for a 1-0 lead.
The Spikes would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead right back.
Mahoning Valley would tie the game right away in the top of the second inning. With one out and Hosea Nelson at second, Michael Tinsley singled to drive in the tying run.
State College would take advantage of a two out error in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead for good. The Spikes added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the score out to the final of 5-2.
Zach Draper (1-1) started and took the loss in 4.0 innings of work. He allowed 5 runs, 4 earned, on 8 hits. Draper walked 2 and struck out 1. Skylar Arias followed with 3.0 innings of shutout relief. Arias walked 1 and struck out 6. Manuel Alvarez pitched a perfect inning of relief. He did not record a walk or a strikeout.
The Scrappers (11-4) look to even the series with the Spikes on Monday night. Juan Mota will get the start. First pitch is set for 7:05.
