LOWELL, Ma. - Luke Sherley lifted a two-run homer in a pivotal four-run eighth inning to give the Connecticut Tigers (6-10) their fourth win in a row and first road victory of the season by a final score of 7-3 over the Lowell Spinners (7-9) on Sunday night at LeLacheur Field.
Ulrich Bojarski drove in the go-ahead run, 4-3, during the eighth inning with a double to the wall in left-center field that scored Cam Warner from third and Bojarski raced home moments later when Ryan Karstetter added an RBI single to make it 5-3 Tigers. The next batter, Sherley, launched the third home run by a Tigers hitter in 16 games with a shot to left against Victor Garcia (Loss, 2-2) to build a 7-3 lead.
Connecticut rallied in the eighth after failing to protect a 3-2 lead for starter Carson Lance in the seventh. The 23-year-old Lamar University alum worked around eight hits, one walk, and no strikeouts during a career-high outing of 6 2/3 innings. Lance left with two outs and a runner on third before Drew Crosby (Win, 2-0) allowed Tyler Dearden to score the tying run on an infield single to third base by Korby Batesole.
Following Connecticut's four-run outburst in the top of eighth, Crosby escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the frame by striking out Dearden to end the threat and maintain a 7-3 advantage for the Tigers. Crosby exited after 1 1/3 innings of relief and Dylan Stock pitched a one-hit ninth inning to secure Connecticut's first win away from Dodd Stadium following an 0-6 start on the road in 2018.
For the third straight night, the Tigers scored first. Leadoff hitter Isrrael De La Cruz opened the game with a base hit and scored three batters later on a sac fly RBI by Gresuan Silverio, who drove in another run on a third-inning sac fly. The 19-year-old catcher from the Dominican Republic also threw out two Lowell base runners attempting to steal second base.
Bojarski gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead in the sixth following a base hit, a stolen base, and an RBI single from Karstetter, who finished 2-for-4 at the plate on Sunday night with two RBI. Julio Martinez also went 2-for-4 during the highest run-scoring night for the Tigers since beating the Spinners 10-3 in Norwich on June 16.
On Monday, Connecticut continues the road series against the Stedler Division-rival Lowell Spinners at 6:35 p.m. Left-handed pitcher and 2018 Detroit Tigers fifth-round pick Adam Wolf will make his New York-Penn League debut against Lowell righty Eduard Bazardo (1-2, 3.60). The Tigers return home to Dodd Stadium on July 4 at 7:05 p.m. against the Spinners with an Independence Day fireworks spectacular following the game.
