Lake Erie Crushers News Release
AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers won for the first time in over a week on Thursday night at Mercy Health Stadium, as they split a double header with the Southern Illinois Miners, falling 2-0 in game one before taking the finale, 2-1.
The Crushers (35-45) snapped a six game losing streak with the victory in game two while the Miners (46-35) saw their eight game winning streak come to an end with the loss in game two.
Game One
The pitching was terrific on both sides. Zac Westcott (11-3) held the Crushers to just four hits over 6 1/3 scoreless innings of work, while Ryan Feierabend (7-5) pitched well despite taking the loss, allowing just a pair of runs on eight hits over five innings.
While the Miners threatened all game, they were only able to score in the top of the second. Anthony Brocato blasted a two run homer to right, his 14th of the season to bring home the only two runs of the game.
The Crushers put a threat together in the bottom of the seventh. Steve Passatempo started the inning with a double and Karl Ellison walked with one out, putting the tying runs on base. However, the Miners were able to slam the door as Joey Pulido (9) struck out the only two batters he faced to score the save and end the threat.
Game Two
Pitching again reigned supreme in the second game, as runs were very tough to come by.
The Miners scored their only run in the top of the second. Ian Walters began the inning with a double to right and he scored on Bryant Flete's two out RBI double to left.
Lake Erie scored both of their runs in the bottom of the fourth. Trevor Achenbach began the inning with a single and he came around to score on Steven Kraft's RBI triple to right. Bryan DeLaRosa brought Kraft home moments later on a sacrifice fly.
Sam Curtis (4-1) pitched very well and picked up the win. He allowed just a run on four hits over five innings of work, while J.T. Perez (12) tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to grab the save. Michael Austin (4-4) took the hard luck loss for the Miners, allowing two runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Kraft led the way for the Crushers offensively, with a pair of extra base hits.
The Crushers will begin a six game road trip on Friday night, as they start a three game series with the first place Schaumburg Boomers. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
