Lake Erie Crushers News Release
LONDON, Ontario, Canada - The Lake Erie Crushers (14-18) won the first game of tonight's double header 11-5 against the London Rippers (13-19) thereby taking the first two games of the three game series by taking advantage of numerous walks and miscues by the Rippers.
The Crushers wasted little time getting on the board. After Adrian Ortiz (2-5, 2R) extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a leadoff single and was moved to third on back to back walks to Robby Kuzdale (2-5, 2 R, BB) and Jason Taylor (1-3, RBI, 2R), Andrew Davis (2-3, 3 RBI) was able to drive in a run with a walk. Rogelio Noris then took the second pitch of his at bat and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Crushers took one inning off before plating four in the third. Things got going thanks to an error by third basemen Stephen Cardullo on a grounder by Jason Taylor. Russ Moldenhauer (1-4) then joined the fun with a single before Andrew Davis followed with an RBI single.
After a strikeout by Noris, Brandon Decker (1-4, RBI) lofted a ball down the right field line, which David Christensen overran and the ball fell fair for an RBI double. JC Figueroa followed with an RBI groundout to second (his second such at bat in as many games) before Rich Witten stroked his first professional hit and RBI with a single to left.
The Rippers were able to score one in the third on a Home Run by Matt Wright (his first of the year), but the Crushers responded in the fourth.
Robby Kuzdale led off the inning and after moving up to second on a wild pitch, Jason Taylor followed with a ground ball to short where Shane Bagley was unable to handle the grounder, which allowed Kuzdale to come around and score.
In the bottom of the fifth the Rippers were able to score a single run on an unusual play; Aaron Glaum (1-2, R) led off the inning with a single and proceeded to steal second, but while on second, starter for the Crushers Josh Rickards (2-1) threw a a wild pitch that bounced off of Rich Witten's thigh and on to the backstop. However, Witten was unable to locate the ball and the speedy Glaum went two bases on the errant pitch and wound up scoring.
The Crushers put the game out of touch in the sixth inning when they tacked on four more runs thanks to four hits, three of which were of the extra base variety. Adrian Ortiz knocked his third single of the game and after a Robbie Kuzdale groundout, Jason Taylor knocked him home with a double.
The merry go-round was just getting started however as Andrew Davis then doubled home Jason Taylor for his third RBI of the game. Rogelio Noris figured if two doubles was good, a home run would be better and took the first pitch of his at bat and sent it over the wall in left to cap the scoring for the Crushers.
The Rippers were able to score three in the bottom of the seventh off of new Crusher Brad Duffy in his second inning of relief, but the runs were too little too late as the Crushers took the first game of the double header 11-5.
Rippers starter Eric Katzman (1-3) took the loss, only going 2.1 IP while allowing six runs, four earned, on four hits while issuing four walks. Josh Rickards picked up the win for the Crushers while going five innings, scattering seven hits, allowing two runs, both earned and striking out five while walking three.
