Miners Avoid Sweep with Win over Otters

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners avoided the sweep from Evansville as the Miners won 4-1. Miners starter Cody Hall pitched four innings only allowing one hit and one run, a solo home run by Otters designated hitter Luis Parache in the top of the fourth inning. Also, he struck out five batters.

The Miners scored first as Chad Maddox hit a double and a RBI in the bottom of the first inning off Otters starter Garrett Bullock to take a 1-0 lead. The Miners scored two more runs in the bottom of the second off Bullock as Cannon Lester hit a sacrifice fly and Chad Maddox hit a RBI single to take a 3-0 lead. After the Otters scored a run in the top of the fourth inning off Miners starter Cody Hall, the Miners added another run off Bullock in the bottom of the fourth inning. Carlos Mendez hit a one out single for a RBI to give the Miners a 4-1 lead. The Miners would go on to defeat the Otters 4-1.

Miners outfielder Darian Sandford had four stolen bases on the night, which gave him 22 on the season. Miners reliever Anthony Collazo threw three innings in relief. He gave up one hit, walked three and struck out five batters. Gabriel Shaw tossed a scoreless eighth inning. Miners closer Max Peterson earned his 11th save of the season by pitching a scorless ninth.

The Miners improve to 19-14 on the season with the win. The Miners are two games behind the Traverse City Beach Bums (21-12) in the Eastern Division. With the loss, the Evansville Otters fall to 13-20, last place in the Eastern Division.

The Miners will begin a nine game road trip in Gateway tomorrow night against the Grizzlies. The Miners will send LHP Shawn Gilblair (3-2, 3.75 ERA) to the mound, as he'll be opposed by RHP Alex Kaminsky (5-1, 3.50 ERA). The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show on the Miners Radio Network will get underway with Mike Ventola at 6:45 pm. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
