Joliet Slammers News Release

(Joliet, IL)- The Slammers used a massive fifth-inning rally to snatch a comeback victory over the rival Boomers on Friday night in a 5-4 final.

After two scoreless innings, Schaumburg tacked three on the board in the third and batted through the order. Mike Valadez led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and Kurexon Sanchez and Gerard Hall followed with walks. With the bases loaded, Frank Pfister was hit by a pitch, taking a one run lead. Cleanup hitter Steve McQuail spanked a two RBI single through the gap, making the score 3-0. They added another in the fourth when Hall doubled to bring Sanchez around from second.

With a crowd of more than 4300 on hand, Joliet energized the fans with a five-run fifth inning to take the lead. Josh Lyon, in his first full game as a Slammer, belted a home run to put Joliet on the board. Trey Manz walked, Brad Netzel doubled, and Jimmy Waters also reached on a walk. With the bases loaded, Abel Nieves lofted a sacrifice fly, scoring Manz from third, cutting the lead in half. Hector Pellot later singled, and Zach Mandelblatt pounded a two-run single to take the 5-4 lead.

After an extended rest period, "Captain" Jake Renshaw took the hill for Joliet, tossing five innings on four runs, walking two and fanning four. Chase Doremus, Brian Smith, and Amalio Diaz all provided excellent relief, collectively shutting out Schaumburg.

Joliet now takes to the road for a local rivalry series against the Windy City ThunderBolts in Crestwood. The three-gamer begins Saturday evening at 6:05. If you can't make it to the game, fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
