January 21, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Los Angeles FC News Release
Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) announced today that the Club has signed free agent goalkeeper John McCarthy through 2022 with a club option for the 2023 season.
"John brings great MLS experience to our Club and will provide depth to our roster," LAFC Co-President & General Manager John Thorrington said. "We expect he will help our team both on and off the field."
McCarthy, 29, joins LAFC after spending the 2020 and 2021 seasons with Inter Miami CF where he made a total of 21 appearances (20 starts) over two years, registering three clean sheets. The Philadelphia native started his MLS career with the Philadelphia Union in 2015 and has played a total of 3,750 MLS regular season minutes in goal, appearing in 42 matches and tallying seven career shutouts.
McCarthy played for the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the United Soccer League (USL) Championship in 2019, registering 10 clean sheets in 30 overall appearances and recording the third best goals against average per 90 minutes (0.86 / 90 minutes).
McCarthy signed with the Union in 2015 and made his MLS debut on Apr. 11, 2015 vs. NYCFC. McCarthy helped the Union to a runner-up finish in the 2015 U.S. Open Cup in his first season. Additionally, McCarthy made 26 appearances and recorded 10 shutouts on loan for the Union's USL affiliate, Bethlehem Steel from 2016-2018.
In 2014 McCarthy started his professional career, joining USL Pro side Rochester New York FC, where he was named USL Rookie of the Year, USL Goalkeeper of the Year, and USL All-League First Team after recording 10 clean sheets in 18 appearances.
The six-foot-one goalkeeper was a collegiate star at La Salle University from 2010-2013, becoming school's all-time leader in saves (468), shutouts, 28 and games played (75) for the Explorers.
