January 21, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Inter Miami CF News Release
Inter Miami CF announced today that it has hired Martin Paterson as a First Team assistant coach. He joins the First Team following two seasons as an assistant coach for Fort Lauderdale CF, the club's lower division side.
"Martin is a fantastic coach who has been instrumental to the growth of our young players with Fort Lauderdale CF over the last two seasons. He brings loads of experience as a player and now as a coach, and knows how to use that to teach players. We're excited to have him as part of our First Team staff and we're happy to see our development pathway is producing both players and coaches," said Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson.
Paterson, 34, helped Fort Lauderdale develop a number of standout players, including current First Team players George Acosta, Edison Azcona, Drake Callender, Ian Fray, Aimé Mabika and Felipe Valencia. He also helped coach the team to an impressive total of 40 goals scored in the 2021 USL League One season, good for fourth-most in the league.
During his playing career, Paterson played for several clubs in his native England, spending the majority of it as a forward for Burnley Football Club. He made over 150 appearances for The Clarets, notching 37 goals and 14 assists in that time. His career in England also saw him feature for Stoke City, Grimsby Town, Scunthorpe United, Huddersfield Town, Bristol City, Fleetwood Town, Blackpool and Port Vale. On the international stage, he represented the Northern Ireland national team, making 22 senior appearances for the country.
Paterson also spent two playing seasons in North America, featuring for Orlando City SC in 2015 and the Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2017, before joining the Rowdies' coaching staff as an assistant in 2018.
