CLEVELAND â The Labatt Blue Cup will be decided this weekend when the Cleveland Barons and Cincinnati Mighty Ducks play back-to-back games on Saturday, April 9th at 7:35pm in Cincinnati and Sunday, April 10th at 5:00pm in Cleveland. The Barons are the reigning Labatt Blue Cup Champion as they won the inaugural Cup last season.
The Mighty Ducks currently lead the season series against the Barons. Decided by points earned in the series, Cincinnati holds an 8-6 lead in the Labatt Blue Cup points standings with a 4-2-0-0 record. The Barons are 2-2-1-1 against the Mighty Ducks this season.
Ryane Clowe's performance against the Mighty Ducks has led the Barons in their ultra-tight series against Cincinnati. In the series, which has featured four one-goal games, Clowe leads all skaters in the series with seven points on three goals and four assists. Nolan Schaefer has been strong in his two appearances against Cincinnati this season. He is 1-1-0 with a 1.82 goals against average and a .934 save percentage against the Barons intra-state rivals this season.
Pierre Parenteau paces the Mighty Ducks with his five points on four goals and one assist against Cleveland this season. Parenteau beat the Barons for a hat trick in the first period in the teams' last meeting on March 19th in Cleveland. Joffrey Lupul also has five points in the season series (3-2-5). Lupul leads the Mighty Ducks with 52 points on 27 goals and 25 assists.
To win the Labatt Blue Cup this season, the Barons must win both games in the weekend set with the Mighty Ducks. Should Cincinnati gain one point, they would clinch the Cup.
