Sens blow past Amerks in the third; McGrattan sets new single season penalty mark

BINGHAMTON - As anticipated, Sens enforcer Brian McGrattan took his place in American Hockey League history at the 2:05 mark of the opening frame. As he dropped the gloves with Rochester's Sean McMorrow, McGrattan eclipsed former teammate Dennis Bonvie's single-season AHL penalty minute record of 522. McGrattan finished the game with 539 penalty minutes this season.
Rochester jumped out front early in the contest when rookie Thomas Vanek scored just 3:35 into the game. Chris Taylor and Jason Pominville picked up the assists on the goal.
The Sens fired back to tie the game 1-1 with just more a minute left in the opening frame as Josh Langfeld was able to put the puck past Amerks goaltender Ryan Miller. Binghamton goalie Ray Emery picked up the only assist on Langfeld's short-handed tally.
After two periods with limited offensive production from both sides, the Senators exploded for four goals in the third stanza for a convincing 5-1 victory.
Binghamton got two goals from rookie Brandon Bochenski who increased his season total to 31 while winger Pat Kavanagh and defenseman Jesse Fibiger each added one tally. Jason Spezza assisted on two of the third period goals and extended his AHL season-high points streak to 16 games.
Ray Emery blocked 30 of 31 shots in addition to his short-handed assist. The point was the first earned by a Binghamton goaltender this season.
Binghamton is back in action tomorrow as they will look to defend their East Division lead in a game against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Tickets for the 7:05 p.m. game are available and can be purchased by calling (607) 722-SENS.
