YOUNGSTOWN - Backboned by 18 saves from rookie netminder Ivan Kulbakov, the Youngstown Phantoms (3-1-0, 6 points) won their third straight game by shutting out the Madison Capitols 2-0.

"Every time he (Kulbakov) has been in net for us he gives us a chance to win," said head coach Brad Patterson. "He came in last week, had a great game against the U17s; all he wants to do is win."

Youngstown got out to a 1-0 lead at the 16:18 mark of the first period on Austin Pooley's sixth goal of the season. Phantoms' defenseman Michael Karow dumped the puck in high off the end glass, and Madison goalie Daniel Lebedeff (27 saves) went out of the net to corral the puck. However the puck took an odd bounce off a stanchion, went over Lebedeff's stick, and right to Pooley, who deposited it into the empty cage. Pooley has scored a goal in every game this season.

After a scoreless second period, the Phantoms were able to get one more past Lebedeff late in the third period to remove all doubt from the outcome. Noah Lalonde, playing in his first game of the year, scored his first goal of the season at 18:05 to stretch the Youngstown lead to 2-0. "Adding Lalonde and (Tommy) Apap back to the lineup was great tonight," said Patterson.

Madison pulled Lebedeff with 1:37 left in the third, but were unable to get anything past Kulbakov.

The Phantoms and Capitols face off again tomorrow night, Saturday, October 8 at the Covelli Centre for Mock Election Night. Fans will have the opportunity to cast their vote for the new mascot's name! The game will be broadcast on HockeyTV (formerly FASTHockey) and on YPHR, Youngstown Phantoms hockey radio.
